Alchemy of yoga and how to live an inspired life

Yoga is about wholeness, health, and vital living. It is about a life inspired in body, mind, and spirit. Through movement, meditation, discussion, and journaling, you will explore the vast resources related to how to live an inspired life by focusing on the last three niyamas or personal practices that comprise the alchemy of yoga. These are necessary for bringing about real, lasting change and cultivating inner happiness and spiritual bliss.

Experience the alchemy of the five elements, the four directions, and the chakra system as an inner and outer map of transformation. These are archetypal and energetic maps that are as metaphorical as they are very real and embodied. Everything you see, taste, touch, feel, and do can be interpreted through the gateway of the elements, directions, and chakras.

You will learn how to tap into these sacred relationships and align yourself with their alchemy in order to gain insight into healing your psyche, emotions, and well-being.

When you join together in a kula (“community of the heart”), you are all the alchemist in your laboratory mixing the ingredients. You wake up to the power you have to go into the laboratory of your life experience and mix the potions you want to create your best life going forward!

How does the alchemy of yoga work?

Something magical and mystical happens when a group of high-intentioned individuals make the decision to gather together for two-hundred hours with the purpose of uplifting their lives and expanding consciousness into radical authenticity.

This program will transform you on three levels: physical alchemy, spiritual alchemy, and mental alchemy. The ancient alchemists, like their yogi counterparts, saw all of creation as composed of earth, air, fire, water, and space. Through their meditations and explorations of these five elements, they created healing and transformative potions and unlocked many of the mysteries of the universe and therein contributed to the evolution of humankind.

As an alchemist yogi, your laboratory is your mat and the ingredients are your body, poses, breath, thoughts, and the mixing it all together changes your life. You are transformed into a peace leader, leading a happiness revolution and changing the world!

Upon completion, you will be prepared to design and confidently lead intelligent alignment driven Vinyasa, Hatha, and Restorative classes, all with your own signature style. You will graduate as a happiness ambassador, ready to authentically and effectively inspire others!

Physical alchemy (tapas)

It ignites the changes you want to make in your life. It is about the getting fired up and passionate. Literally, it means heating the body through moving and breathing in the Vinyasa.

Mental alchemy (svadhaya)

While you are following the discipline of tapas and engaging in the physical practice to help move your stuck energy, you are watching yourself. In yoga, you study the self to learn about the self.

Here, the mental alchemy is through self-observation. You witness what is going on in your thoughts, what are you thinking. You tune in to your intuition to enhance clarity and harmony between what you think, say, and do. You remember to remember who you really are.

Through this, your ego softens from being I centered to seeing your interconnectedness to all things, people, nature, and energies. You humbly realize your nature of union in this interweb.

Spiritual alchemy (ishvara pranidhana)

As you are doing and watching, you let go of the ego of judgment. You will move beyond wanting life to be different and begin to feel the surrender that allows what is being offered to mix together. You practice ishvara pranidhana as you trust the universal intelligence that hugs you from all directions to know what it is doing.

Once you find this trust, you begin to believe that beauty and goodness are within you, flowing non-stop. You will understand that there is no reason to stop this flow for its natural current is to align with the current of grace that is everywhere outside you. Beauty becomes your way of life. Happiness becomes your natural alchemy once again.

Driving directions from Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR)

Exiting from Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR) turn right in direction to Santa Cruz and Nicoya. Following the paved highway, you will pass through different villages (Filadelfia, Belen, Rio Canas, Santa Cruz) until you reach after approximately 65 kilometers or one hour the outskirts of the town of Nicoya.

You will come to an intersection with a four-way red flashing light and there will be signs there indicate a right turn into the town of Nicoya. Make that right turn and drive straight through the town of Nicoya, staying always on the main road and no turns. Drive slowly, as there are a lot of pedestrians in this bustling town.

As you leave Nicoya on the other side, continue south on the paved road in the direction of Samara. There will be some twists and turns as you pass through different villages, but you stay always on the paved main road.

After approximately 30 kilometers, you will see a large gas station on your left. There is also a hardware store and a little Soda Cafe for snacks and drinks. Stop here and get gas if needed, it’s the last chance on the way to Nosara.

Shortly after the gas station, the paved road makes a sharp curve to the left. At the apex of that curve, you will notice a small dirt road turning off to the right downhill. Take this dirt road. It’s the road to Garza, Guiones Beach, and Nosara. It is marked with several signs.

Stay on this dirt road for about 20 kilometers. There are, once again, some turns and twists, but stay on the main road. There are also occasional signs that tell you how many kilometers you still have to go to reach Playa Garza, Guiones, and Nosara.

You will pass through different villages, until you come to a T-intersection, turn right here in the direction to Playa Garza where you’ll soon meet the ocean on your left. Continue straight through the village and leave Garza behind in the direction of Playa Guiones and Nosara.

After approximately 300 meters, you’ll see on your left a gate and the Blue Spirit Costa Rica sign (in blue and orange letters). Make a turn to the left and follow the little winding road all the way to the parking lot and the main building.

Driving directions from Juan Santamaria Airport (SJO)

Leave Juan Santamaria Airport (SJO) and follow the signs towards San Jose Escazu. Stay on this road for about 10 to 15 minutes depending on the traffic. Turn right at the intersection and you will see a McDonald’s on the far left-hand corner. This is Autopista del Sol or Highway 27.

Follow the signs to Caldera and Puntarenas (63.3 kilometers). You will pass the Port of Caldera and once you get to Puntarenas Route 27, turn into Highway 1.

Leave Puerto Caldera and travel northeast toward Liberia and Limonal (84 kilometers). After 28 kilometers, you will pass the little town of Esparza. Keep on going straight for six kilometers, passing the first turn off to Puntarenas, the turn off to Puerto Caldera, and later the second turn off to Puntarenas. Keep going straight for approximately 50 kilometers until you reach the center of Limonal.

Leave Limonal to the west and travel toward the Puente de La Amistad (29 kilometers) and Nicoya (63.5 kilometers). Pass over the Puente de la Amistad (it’s a bridge) and continue for another 21 kilometres until you come to a T-junction. Turn right at the “T” onto the road 21. Follow this road for 13 kilometers and turn left toward the town of Nicoya. Enter Nicoya and drive straight through the town always staying on the main road, no turns. Drive slowly, as there are a lot of pedestrians in this bustling town.

As you leave Nicoya on the other side, continue south on the paved road in the direction of Samara. There will be some twists and turns as you pass through different villages, but you stay always on the paved main road.

After approximately 30 kilometers you will see a large gas station on your left. There is also a hardware store and a little Soda Cafe for snacks and drinks. Stop here and get gas if needed. It’s the last chance on the way to Nosara.

Arrival by airplane

Please book your flight to arrive at Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR) or Juan Santamaria Airport (SJO). An alternative option is to take a 40-minute short domestic flight from San Jose to the local Nosara Airport (NOB). Transfer from and to these airports is available upon request.

    Magical Experience

PROS Pros: I loved this three week program, full of lots of hard work and lots of fun. Silvia and Emily really put so much time and effort into making this teacher training a full and complete experience for their students. They met me where I was and helped me clear the path for where I go next.

CONS Cons: In hindsight I would have not shared a room with two other women it was very intense and I could have done with a lot more personal space.

PROS Pros: Silvia and Emily held space for each student so wonderfully and did their best to cater to everyone, I was so impressed at how they held everything together with such a big group of women, and man! Everything about the whole training was so well coordinated, I would have liked to spend more time on Ayurveda. Thank you ladies :)

CONS Cons: There was a lack of authenticity form leadership. Love was preached constantly, yet leaders often singled out individuals, not showing them love or respect at all. There seemed to be a lot of ego in the leaders.

PROS Pros: Location and accommodations couldn't have been better. Trainers have beautiful practices and are extremely knowledgeable in the world of yoga, Ayurvedics, etc...

Review by Kathie Disner from United States

CONS Cons: Many of the activities we were promised did not happen. There was no cooking class, and instead of a natural hot springs we went to a spa. There was very little space for the yoga class and we were informed by email the day before the retreat began that we needed to bring a yoga mat, I did not receive the email until I was already traveling. So yoga on a tile floor was out of the question. Getting to see the sunflower fields was high on every one's list that participated, so when it was not our schedule my daughter and I asked Silvia about it. She berated us for being ungrateful and that we were coming from a low self for asking. Then she sent out a very passive aggressive email about non-violent communication. We were not spoken to at dinner after that and when everyone was saying good-bye at the end, she hugged everyone else then told me she could walk fast so that I wouldn't have to be near her. I was stunned and hurt. Fortunately, all of the participants in the retreat were very nice and there was very little drama with them, considering it was 13 women! I will not book with alchemy tours again.

PROS Pros: We got to see many historic places in Italy, and visited several wineries. Our accommodations were very nice, I loved being out in the country.

Organizer response: In 10 years of leading retreats I've never had clients like this Mother & Daughter who I have the utmost compassion for. This was their first trip outside of the United States and putting aside their cultural insensitivity, they had been on other yoga retreats. What stood out from day 1 is that they had nothing but sharp criticism and complaints about these other retreats. What this person says about this retreat is NOT True. It is False. They received a comprehensive 33 page Yoga Packet with material from sun salutations to science supporting Yoga Themes for each day. She came to yoga once. They also received Activities Itinerary. ITINERARY: CULTURE 1. The Itinerary was well curated & professional. It was EXACTLY as we promised for the week. With that said they complained so loudly that they hadn't seen Sunflowers they bullied us into requiring we make it happen. 2. In an effort to please them & quiet the incessant complaining, I contracted drivers at additional expense to drive us around Tuscany. THIS WAS NEVER IN OUR ITINERARY. 3. They were brought to HOT SPRINGS Terme Grotto Guisti. They just don't understand the Italian hot springs feed the Thermal Pools! 4. Daily emails with Yoga Philosophy & Happiness Coaching were sent out including NVC (nonviolent communication) system. This is routine coaching material. Also Brain Science, Meditation, & Mantra. These clients do not know how to conduct themselves in group travel. Not a good fit.

CONS Cons: No consistent and well thought out location for yoga classes. Mixed messages about need to bring own yoga mat prior to trip so many people did not have access. Yoga not as prominent a feature of the retreat as I had anticipated.

PROS Pros: The location was beautiful and very relaxing. Food and staff at the resort could not have been better. Enjoyed tours of many beatiful places.

Organizer response: Dear Kind Soul, The beauty of being in Tuscany for yoga is not to be stuck in one place. On all our retreats worldwide we offer MORE than just one single place for yoga. We meditate outdoors and indoors. We practice yoga asana indoors and outdoors "Under the Tuscan Sun" in covered yoga shala. We meet for Dharma talks and self-development coaching indoors and in outdoor living room at our villa out of Architectural Digest. I can't imagine being in Tuscany and stuck inside one single closed room. We go out of our way to provide our clients with authentic experiences as part of our surroundings. As this was your first time outside of the United States I can imagine that accepting a new culture and new ways of doing things is part of the learning for you. It is also difficult to judge the Meditation, Yoga Asana, Pranayama (Breathwork), Dharma Talks as you attended only 1 class. Without any frame of reference perhaps you missed an opportunity to learn more? With over 15,000 hours of experience teaching yoga (all 8 Limbs) and 20 years of teaching there was so much depth offered to you. It is a shame you choose not to experience this part of the retreat. However as we always say, "this is your vacation, everything is optional. even the yoga." We honor your decision not to try yoga with us more than once and hope you find more of what you're looking for in the future. Blessings from Italia! Namaste and peace in all ways.

"I am impressed on how hard Silvia try to meet everyones schedule, it cant be easy. Thanks to Silvia's dedication and assurance I can flow through yoga poses, I am now actually playing with yoga more and listening to what my body inspires me to do instead of trying to do yoga like everyone else. Yoga has become so much more an enriching experience for me rather than a physical struggle. I am very grateful for all the help she has given me."

"They really planned an incredible trip. I really lucked out as they not only supplied me with a wonderful yoga group and practice for the week but each day was chock full of things to participate in if I so wished. They gave us access to the real deal Bali by incorporating biking, tours, decadent meals, transport, so many activities, beach time, talks, etc. They have great taste and are very down to earth. They think of everything and are really there to answer questions and provide great resource to things you want to explore. Silvia is such a loving and inspiring yoga instructor. These guys are definitely doing what they were meant to do in life. Great people, great trip. I look forward to doing another trip with them soon!"

"I attended Alchemy Tours’ yoga retreat in Bali, and I can honestly say it was the most fulfilling travel experience I’ve ever had. It was hard to come back to reality, and not just in the typical “I’ve taken much needed time off to relax and it’s hard to get back in my routine” sort of way… But more, going on this trip made me understand that there was a much greater disparity between the potential for happiness in my life and what I considered to be my “normal” state than I had realized – and that they were further apart than they ever should be. To me, the experience with Alchemy Tours can be divided into two categories: vacation and personal reflection. As a vacation, it was amazing. White water rafting through a jungle ravine, a relaxing bike tour through Balinese rice patties, beaches, exposure to local culture, great restaurants and a gorgeous place to stay that our group had all to ourselves. It was just organized enough to feel active without feeling too busy. Previously, I wouldn’t have asked for more than that in a trip, and it was awesome in that way. But the part that really surprised me was the way Silvia’s constant positivity, enthusiasm and no-pressure encouragement would really make me reflect on the person I am, and I began to conceptualize the things I could change to improve my life as a whole."

"I had the best vacation ever with Alchemy Tours this Spring. I wanted to do a yoga retreat with equal parts relaxing, yoga and exploring and it was just that. The resort was gorgeous, not your typical overrun Mexico tourist spot but a beautiful, simple, chic bungalow style resort in the jungle and with its own beach. I was skeptical going on vacation with a bunch of strangers but everyone was lovely and I came back refreshed and happy, as evidenced by my yelp profile pic nuzzling a Mexican beach puppy. "

"Silvia is an inspiring teacher and really helped me to look at what I wanted out of the trip and myself when it ended. Normally my yoga classes are short and intense but this was a wonderful change of pace. I approach most things cynically including yoga talks and journaling but they yoga’d the cynic out of me and I couldn’t have been happier with the experience. Oh and it was an amazing price. And I’m going again next year, the ultimate vote of confidence."

"My husband and I went on a yoga retreat to Xinalani with Alchemy Tours. This was our first yoga retreat so we weren’t sure what to expect. Vacation for us means getting outside, being active, eating delicious food and perhaps a few cocktails. This trip provided all of the above and more. Alchemy Tours provided us with a ton of information and helped us set up a scuba diving and surfing excursion. They also arranged for the group to give back to the community we were staying in, which was very inspiring. There was a planned group activity every day which was included and optional. Everything was optional without judgement, even the yoga classes. Classes were taught every morning and evening, with a few workshop options throughout the week. Yoga classes were some of the best we have ever taken. There was a great variety that incorporated fun, music and mindfulness in a way that is rare to find. Every meal was fantastic, fresh and delicious! Every morning I woke up looking forward to that days fresh squeezed juice (and of course coffee). We do not have any dietary restrictions, but many on the trip did, the chef was masterful in handling all of the gluten free, dairy free, vegetarian, pescetarian, and vegan request. We will absolutely travel with Alchemy tours again and recommend them to everyone we know."

"Every activity during the week was carefully planned and extremely purposeful, however, there was no feeling of pressure to do things that were not of interest to you. The yoga was great. As beginner yogi I felt welcomed and confident even though advanced yogis seemed to be enjoying the classes and flows as much as I did. The yoga also varied daily. It was always interesting and I was consistently benefiting in various ways from the classes. Best of all, Silvia and Malia assisted in so much besides just yoga. There were chakra talks, happiness coachings, astrology readings, dancing, meditating, photo shoots, game playing and scavenger hunts. The days I spent in Mexico flew by faster and more enjoyably than I could have ever anticipated. Whether you are a hard-core yogi and spiritualist, or someone just looking to get away from the stresses of life I would recommend you to Alchemy Tours. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. I will definitely be booking with them again!"

"I’ve been on two retreats with Alchemy Tours – one in Bali and one in Mexico, and botanical holding hands loved them both (in fact, we are currently planning to rope our friends into joining us for another!). The two experiences were entirely different to one another, but both contained a wonderful balance of excellent yoga, guided introspection and great fun. Silvia’s the most talented yoga instructor I know, with the added depth of having a background in professional training and development and a natural affinity for study. These talents enable her to deliver elegantly constructed retreats where her yoga classes, self study exercises and fun activities are all weaved together over the week to complement the retreat theme. You will be amazingly nourished by a week which will no doubt include incredible food, exploration of the place you’re in, development of your yoga practice, new activities, personal insights and lots and lots of laughter. I can’t recommend joining them highly enough."

"I took a trip with Silvia and Alchemy tours in 2012, it was absolutely life changing, botanical jumping beautiful, easy and fun. They are friendly, fun positive energy, and have thought of all the details to create a trip that is both easy, enjoyable and potent. Each person on the trip was amazing, and the activities and nurturing environment of the resort they chose worked beautifully to create new friendships and a great group dynamic. Expect a great time, great insights and to return home refreshed and with a happier outlook on life with wider possibilities! I really can see the whole course of my life shifted with this trip, and it is completely wonderful. I would not hesitate to recommend a trip with Alchemy Tours!"
