Course curriculum

The course curriculum covers the full spectrum of yogic science. We start from the absolute basics which mean this course is suitable for everyone including beginners with no previous yoga experience. Our course is designed to make you a confident, competent and qualified yoga teacher.

During the Level 1 Intensive we assist you to develop your own appreciation of yoga and our style of yoga is directed towards you personal experience and individual needs. Whether you do this course to become a yoga teacher or just for your own education is your choice. Either way you will gain a comprehensive understanding of yoga. We cover in the course:

Asanas: Yoga postures moving, holding and corrective for the various bodily systems; e.g. digestive, hormonal, reproductive, etc.

Pranayama: Yogic breathing techniques to both energize and balance.

Mudra: Energetic gestures

Mantra: Energetic sound patterns

Yoga Nidra: Systematic yogic relaxation to change habits in the subconscious mind

Meditation: A systematic approach to release stress and increase the awareness

Shatkarmas: To purify and cleanse the body

Anatomy and physiology: Structure and function of the main physical body systems, and the energy systems of the subtle body. Safety in Yoga.

Therapeutic yoga: Elementary yoga for pregnancy, back problems, migraines, breathing needs, etc.

Postural techniques: Basic techniques for adjustment and alignment of the posture.

Teaching methodology: To help you plan classes and be an effective teacher

Introduction to Ayurveda: Ayurveda is the sister healing science to yoga

Introduction to Yoga Philosophy: A brief look at the deep wisdom and tradition of yoga.

This list of topics may look a bit daunting if you dont have much experience with yoga. But dont be put off. We teach in a very practical manner and aim to make these topics easily digestible for you.

Sometimes we hear people say that yoga is too hard for them or that they are too stiff. This is not a problem. We have a motto around here, slowly, slowly and we take it seriously. The course starts right at the beginning and develops step by step which means you will never be thrown in the deep end. Some past participants have had very little experience with yoga, or have not been physically fit, and have managed just fine. On the other hand some participants have taught yoga for 20 years and also get a huge amount of new knowledge and experience.

We find that the real challenge in yoga is self-mastery. Learning to settle into a pose, maintaining awareness of your breath, mind and emotions takes a lot of practice. Real yoga is not accomplished in short time it is a lifetime journey and its rewards are substantial.

Yoga workshops, classes, philosophy, and kirtan

Workshops and classes are held everyday starting early each morning and continuing in the afternoon. We also have an evening program including philosophy and kirtan. There are a few periods of time out for personal needs, like going to the local shops, etc.

Our sessions are usually 2 - 3 hours long and include both group and personal work. We conduct them in our covered outdoor classroom and also inside the main building and at other locations such as the adjacent beach.

We encourage group participation. This makes learning more fun and helps the learning process. We are aware that each person has a different learning style and so we utilize a range of methods to help you absorb the lessons.

Our classes are taught from the teacher training course book which we have been developing and refining over the last seventeen years. We supply all workbooks and training manuals. Extra textbooks are of benefit, although not compulsory, and are available for purchase at Ashram Yoga.

Personal teachings from Ashram Yoga

Ashram Yoga had its beginnings in Auckland in 1980. Since then we have taught many thousands of students in classes, workshops, retreats and teacher training courses. Our teacher training programs have been consistently popular and we have many hundreds of graduates many of whom are actively teaching today.

Our teachings have their roots with Swami Satyananda Saraswati who taught traditional yoga in the West in the 1960s. Ashram Yogas style may be described as classical and integrated yoga. Our approach is to use the complete system of yoga for our whole person and personality; physiological through to psychological aspects; body, energy, emotions and mind.

Our approach is suitable for beginners, seniors, pregnant women and those with injuries. For those looking for advanced practices youll find our yoga both profound and challenging!

Located on Opoutere Beach (pictured right), Ohui Retreat is far removed from the noise and distraction of modern living. The air is filled with prana (life-force) and the environment is truly beautiful. Just being in such natural surroundings nurtures the soul. The nearest town Whangamata (pronounced fong-ah-mah-taa) is about two hours drive from Auckland.

We serve two to three cooked meals a day breakfast, lunch and dinner. All meals are vegetarian. We understand that easily digestible food cooked with love provides the most energy for learning yoga. We provide a high standard of simple, nourishing food.

We serve wholesome vegetarian food including rice, lentils, cooked vegetables, salads and fruit. The food is delicious, easy to digest and nourishing. Most of our food is gluten and dairy free. We use organic, locally sourced and in-season food wherever possible. We provide herbal teas, regular tea and coffee. We have clean and delicious water from our own underground supply.

We encourage eating wholesome, unprocessed food in moderate quantities so that the mind is less stimulated or disturbed making your yoga practice more comfortable and achievable. We feed everyone very adequately although if you are on a raw food diet (or similar) and need extra items you are welcome to store them in our fridge.
