Program

In this immersion program, you will meet all Yoga Alliance standards and beyond. There will be instruction on methodology and techniques, effective sequencing practices, postural alignment, pranayama, philosophy, sutras, history and lineage, meditation techniques, subtle and gross anatomy, injury prevention, effective modifications and special populations, planning workshops, practice teaching, effective equipment use, hands-on adjustments and assistance, and the business of yoga.

Before training

  • You need to have a pretty solid personal practice prior to starting the yoga teacher training as the contact hours will be physically and mentally demanding. You should have a minimum of one to one and a half years of established Hatha yoga practice and an interest in deepening your study of it.
  • Please see the recommended reading list. Although these sources are not required homework they will be reference during the course of the training. If you are familiar with them it will be helpful to your learning path and development as a yoga teacher.
  • Please plan to practice two to four hours of asana daily. The remainder of the hours will be made up of study, workshop, collaborative projects and practice teaching.
  • After sending in your initial registration request and form a representative from the Caribe Yoga Academy will be in contact with you within three to five business days with your acceptance or details about any further information needed. As long as you meet all requirements and agree to the terms and conditions, in most cases you will receive acceptance.

During training

  • There will be some non-contact hours required but they should not accumulate to more than two hours daily in the program.
  • There will be a minimum of two hours of asana practice daily during the yoga teacher training and a maximum of five hours of asana daily. The remaining hours will be made up of workshop, group work, practice teaching, and study.
  • You will have the opportunity to actually practice teaching classes. In fact, it is a requirement of the Yoga Alliance that you should gain hours with actual live teaching experience.

After training

  • The Caribe Yoga Academy seeks to maintain an on-going support system and connection with all graduates and students. They look forward to hearing about and being involved in their students' present and future yogic path. Be sure to get added to any social media groups, blogs, and mailing lists. Also check in about future opportunities to assist or guest teach.
  • You will be qualified to register as a 200-RYT upon successful graduation from Caribe Yoga Academy, but registering with the Yoga Alliance is a separate process and may be done directly through their website. It is not required, but it is highly recommended.
  • If you lose your certification, you may contact the Caribe Yoga Alliance for a new official copy of your Yoga Alliance approved certificate. The certificate will be mailed once the certificate replacement fee is received.

Certification

With successful completion of all program requirements and the final exam, you will receive a Yoga Alliance-recognized 200-hour yoga teacher training certificate which qualifies you to lead group asana classes according to the Yoga Alliance standards.

Avani Gilbert
Yoga Alliance E-RYT 500 (Yoga)
Avani Gilbert is the founder and director of CYA programs. She is an E-RYT 500 / YACEP / Reiki Master Teacher, LMT & Clarity Breathwork Practitioner. Avani started exploring yoga as a teenager to counter participation in high school competitive sports. From there, she began a lifelong love, journey, and an endless study. She has participated in yoga teacher training throughout the United States and Costa Rica while accumulating close to 4.000 hours of teaching experience. Avani is the director of the retreat and training center OM at Cashew Hill.
Adriana Leiva
Adriana’s passion for spirituality and body movement started at a young age. At the age of 18, she received her first certification for yoga and massage. The process has not slowed down or stopped since. Adriana is now a 500-hour certified yoga teacher, Yogakids facilitator, and co-founder of the ASOyoga (Costa Rican Yoga Association). She has studied a variety of yogic styles as well as philosophy and Bhakti under Dr. Mark Dycscowksi in India and earned her degree in Physiotherapy.

Location

This retreat will take place in the coastal town of Puerto Viejo de Talamanca in the province of Limón in southeastern Costa Rica. It is simply known as Puerto Viejo to locals and offers many conveniences as an up-and-coming beach town that was once very off the beaten path. This place is a nature lovers dream. It is takes about four and a half hours by bus or shuttle from the Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO).

Puerto Viejo is a laid back village that moves to a reggae beat. Shirts and shoes are optional at many restaurants. The beaches are never crowded and offer lots of activities including surfing, snorkeling, biking, hiking, gourmet restaurants, wildlife, and friendly people. People often return once they have visited Puerto Viejo. It is a fun and inexpensive place that can easily turn into your favorite vacation spot. Rent a bicycle and see it all. You can also take a bus or hire a guide for great day trips.

Food

Mouth-watering vegetarian breakfast, lunches, and dinners will be served daily during this training. Gluten-free and vegan options are also available by special request. As much of the food as possible is sourced from on-site organic gardens and locally from the community. This is truly a labor of love that can be seen and tasted with each serving, and is often one of the highlights of many tired students' experience.

Things to do (optional)

If you are feeling adventurous, Caribe Yoga Academy can organize a series of excursions and tours for you at an additional cost. Puerto Viejo is full of fun adventures and explorations for your free time. Try a surf class, pop into the spa for a massage or reiki, go horseback riding, hike waterfalls, visit the indigenous reserve or chocolate house, take a bike cruise, spot the local wildlife, or simply beach hop on 14 kilometers of pristine Caribbean beaches on your days off from training.

Spa treatments

You can book spa treatments for an additional cost. Ayurvedic, Swedish, Thai, deep tissue, and trigger point massages are offered. Reiki, cranio-sacral, and integrative healing yoga therapies are available. Clarity breathwork and lymph drainage services are also provided.

How to get there

Arrival by airplane

Please book your flight to arrive at Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in San Jose.

Arrival by bus

Puerto Viejo is a four and a half-hour bus or shuttle ride from the Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO). From its town center, a taxi can bring you and your luggage three blocks back and up the jungle hill to Cashew Hill Jungle Lodge.

Cancellation Policy

  • A reservation requires a deposit of 14% of the total price.
  • The deposit is non-refundable, if the booking is cancelled.
  • The rest of the payment should be paid 30 days before arrival.
