McLeod Ganj, or upper Dharamsala, is nestled into the foothills of the Dhauladhars, which rises to 4546 meters. A hill station from the days of the British Raj, it is now often referred to as The Little Lhasa and offers travelers a unique opportunity to experience vibrant Tibetan culture. McLeod Ganj is 9 kilometers by bus (4 kilometers via the taxi route) up the hill from lower Dharamsala or Kotwali Bazar. As the headquarters of the Kangra district, the local Indian government offices are located there.

The residence of His Holiness the Dalai Lama is opposite the Tsuklakhang. McLeod Ganj is largely populated by Tibetans and it is surrounded by pine, Himalayan oak, rhododendron, and deodar forests with a magnificent view of the Kangra Valley. Today, streams of Tibetan refugees from Tibet and other parts of the world converge at McLeod Ganj to receive blessings and teachings from His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Western and Indian tourists, academics, and spiritual seekers come here in large numbers to see the rebirth of an ancient and profound civilization. The high altitude and cool weather contribute physically to this recreation of original Tibetan environment.

Not really a retreat. Definitely not for beginners

CONS I did not get what I paid for. I was included in an ongoing teacher training course, where most of the classes were not appropriate (designed for teachers). I ended up doing only 2 asana classes per day, which I could more or less follow due to previously acquired knowledge. Otherwise it would have been completely frustrating. I had to practice patience and contentment, though, which is great for meditation :) The school is simple, the facilities and accommodation are bellow standard for what the schools charges ( considering Indian prices). Cleaningness is a problem in both school and accommodation ( students are expected to do their own bit which is not easy when you have a big group and no formal rules or organisation). In general the school lacks a bit more care and using the student fees to improve their comfort. And of course it is oriented for TTC, so I do not recommended anyone to come for a retreat and "immersion" into yoga.

PROS Staff was very friendly, teachers were good. Cook was good.

    2.5 Value for money
    5 Accommodation & facilities
    5 Food
    5 Location
    2.5 Quality of activity
    2.5 Overall impression

"Not to be afraid of teaching; sometimes we can be our own worst enemy and let fear and personal doubts get in the way of an amazingly uplifting experience. It was a absolute pleasure to be surrounded by such an incredible support group for our first practicums."

"The group of yogis and teachers in the class have supported each other along our journeys. I have learned throughout the past two weeks to open up to strangers in Chandras nurturing environment and continue to allow myself to grow. We had our 30-minute practicum this week and to watch the other students come alive in their practices with this supporting environment was inspiring. This has made me become a stronger person knowing that I have open-minded and loving people surrounding me."

  • Review by Katy Merlet from USA

"Chandra Yoga was one of the best experiences in my life. I was already a Bikram Yoga instructor before I went to the course and thought I already knew quite a bit about yoga. I was wrong, and I learned more than I could of ever even imaged! The instructors were so knowledgeable, especially Dr. Sushil. I made friends for life and loved every second of it! I would go back in a heartbeat! Thank you, Chandra Yoga!"

"The month that I spend with Chandra Yoga doing my YTTC was the best time in my life. And it is totally true. Everything was just how it is supposed to be. This school helped me understand that everything is possible. With them I grew as yoga teacher. Super professional instructors, who were very kind and had a passion for what they do. There I met some of the best people, who became not just friends, they became my family. I just can say big big thanks to Chandra and all of the people who were teaching us. Big love to all of you. Namaste"

"It was a privilege to travel to Dharamsala and take classes with such gifted teachers at Chandra Yoga! Their focus on teaching diverse styles of yoga made it easier for me to choose the style that best suited my personal practice. They taught us to reach our maximum potential as far as our own body awareness, which facilitated the ultimate goal which is to connect with students' physical and spiritual needs. Most teachers had a different background and nationality, which added a unique element to each class. Before I started my training I had doubts that I could become a teacher myself, but only a couple of weeks upon returning home I taught a few classes and my students were completely satisfied and wanting more! One of the greatest experiences at Chandra was the connections I made with other fellow Yogis and the satisfaction that my teacher certification came from an organization filled with love and integrity."

I came to the course with the thought of learning “a gentle balancing exercise called yoga.” But now I open my eyes with a new knowledge and deep understanding of what yoga means. It’s a trip, an adventure to come back to your home, your inner-self. Thank you Chandra Yoga to bring me home. Much love and see you back soon."

"I completed my RYT-200 with Dr. Sushil at his Dharamsala location in June 2015. The asana and anatomy workshops were done by Emily Young, a talented instructor who really brought the principles of Yoga into her everyday interactions. The philosophic, pranayama practices, and meditative aspects of the course were done by Dr. Sushil, the head teacher of this school. Dr. Sushil is a knowledgeable and helpful teacher. The staff is tremendously friendly and the experience I had was practically flawless. I enjoyed it thoroughly and intend to visit Dr. Sushil and his team when I go back to India. Highly recommend for RYT-200 TTC."

"I participated at the Dharamsala location and it was an amazing experience. I loved the location and the Tibetan culture. We were a walking distant from the Dali llama temple which was spectacular. Besides the location the teachers were inspiring, welcoming, and fun! I learned so much from the teachers and the classes we took, I am a new-improved me! The only downside was the water would randomly turn off and the side note that I don't like Indian food but there is plenty of cute places to eat in town that is tourist recommended. I say if you're thinking about joining, do it. You won't regret it! Thank you to Dr. Sushil and the team!"

"I personally loved the structure of the program because I was immersed in the training from 6 am till 6:30 pm. Being in a group of like-minded individuals living with one another is an amazing experience and teaches you so much about yourself on another level than going to a weekend workshop or monthly program. The staff knowledge and experience was beyond my expectations and they were extremely genuine in their concern for your learning. Every aspect and every moment of that experience changed my connection to yoga at a high frequency, I am so grateful."

"I was not sure what exactly to expect from this course. I simply came with an open mind and willingness to learn. While I have learned much about yoga, asanas, philosophy, pranayama, Ayurveda, anatomy, and meditation, I have also learned that there is so much I do not know about yoga. This insight will motivate me to further my study and practice. I have Sushil and his wealth of knowledge to thank for this inspiration. I am definitely considering taking the 500 hour course. Hope to see you again soon!"
