The training

As each day unfolds, Eva Yoga will add a new layer of knowledge and depth to your understanding of Yin, from the basic origins and intentions of practice to the subtle skills of holding space. Throughout the week, you'll explore long, luxurious Yin classes and other complementary practices, alongside in-depth lectures and practical hands-on training, giving you the tools to create thoughtful sequences, hold a safe space, and confidently lead classes.

You'll also enjoy contemplative pauses to breathe and be between the vines of the Douro Valley. As a blend of training and retreat, the program offers not only the structure of a comprehensive course but also a chance to recharge in a retreat setting, far from the rush of daily life. Whether you’re expanding your teaching repertoire or deepening your practice, this unique week will guide you deeper into the gentle power of Yin yoga.

About Yin Yoga

Yin Yoga invites you to slow down and soften into the present moment through longer-held passive stretches (generally 3 - 5 minutes). As a convergence of traditional Hatha yoga and principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Yin creates space to gently process and release the physical and emotional layers of tension.

Informed by modern science and ancient meridian theories, Yin Yoga can benefit tissues in your body often ignored by other styles of yoga and movement. Complementing more active approaches to yoga, this patient and passive practice focuses on the fascial networks, helping to reduce constriction and adhesions in the inner fabric of the body. Anatomically, Yin yoga also takes into account individual bone structure variation. Through observing your unique sites and sensations of tension and compression, Yin encourages you to be adaptable in the approach to each posture.

The poses can also explore how dense patterns of fascia overlay the traditional tracings of subtle energy systems. Beyond the physical experience, Yin Yoga is informed by the Chinese five-element theory and the meridian lines (of acupuncture), utilizing long-held postures to stimulate specific energetic lines. Each meridian has unique correspondences with elements, organs, seasons, and emotions, etc, adding another layer of depth to the practice.

Lastly, Yin Yoga is also a mindfulness practice. As you rest and reflect in each pose, you sit with all the thoughts and sensations in the present moment, letting go of attachment and aversion. In the pace and pressures of the modern world, Yin Yoga lets you slow down and find sanctuary in the stillness of the pose.

Unfortunately, Yin Yoga is often mistaken as merely "slow yoga" and is sometimes taught by instructors without formal training. By learning about the deeper intentions and origins of Yin Yoga, you can expand and share the benefits of this practice with the communities.

Benefits of Yin Yoga

  • Find Balance | Offers a counterbalance to the fast-paced demands of modern life through Yin-Yang philosophy
  • Release Fascia | Targets fascial tension and adhesions (fibrosis), promoting better tissue hydration, mobility, and resilience
  • Explore Variable Anatomy | Acknowledges individual anatomical differences, teaching you how to adapt each pose based on your unique bone structure
  • Balance Energy, Elements, and Emotions | Supports the flow of Chi through the meridian system, benefiting corresponding organs and emotions for overall wellbeing
  • Reflect and Meditate | Provides quiet space for mindfulness, fostering self-awareness
  • Emotional Release | Offers space for emotional processing, helping to heal and integrate the "issues in your tissues"
  • Complements Active Expressions of Yoga | It complements more dynamic yoga styles by addressing deep tissues, aiding recovery, and enhancing flexibility.
  • Additional Benefits | Improves sleep, enhances body awareness, provides anti-inflammatory effects, supports bone health, and contributes to overall physical and mental well-being.

About The Yin Yoga Teacher Training

In the immersive training and retreat, you’ll take a deep dive into Yin philosophy, variable anatomy, fascial health, and the meridian system so that you can learn how to sequence and theme meaningful Yin yoga classes that fully support your students (and yourself) to slow down, release tension, and create space.

During the one-week training, you’ll explore the theory, science, and anatomy of Yin Yoga, balanced with experiential and energetic aspects of each asana. You'll unpack contemporary research on fascia, a sustainable approach to stretching, and an individualistic perspective of the body. You'll also learn about the foundational principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the five-element theory, and how to weave and work with the meridian lines in your Yin practice and teaching.

In the asana analysis, you'll explore an adaptable approach to instructing, propping, and adapting classical and creative Yin poses. Not only will you learn different strategies for guiding and supporting Yin poses, but also the "why" of each asana, gaining a deeper understanding of the physical, emotional, and energetic benefits.

Connecting these concepts into your classes, you'll learn how to confidently sequence and theme Yin yoga practices, as well as how to mindfully communicate and hold a safe space. The training also incorporates other traditional tools and complementary practices, including pranayama (breathwork), meditation, Yin-Yang yoga, yoga Nidra, Restorative Yoga, and myofascial release.

This course is open to dedicated yoga students and teachers who desire to deepen their Yin practice. Offering this unique expression of yoga to your students will add diversity to your teaching and help you (and your students) to find a little stillness in the stress of modern life.

Lage

The Source Retreat is located in a small town in the Douro Valley, centered between the larger towns of Mesao Frio and Peso Da Regua. Built into the hillside, the house uses gravity to help wine flow from the ancient stone tanks into the barrels below.

As they’ve restored the property, their goal has been to respect its history while offering the modern comforts needed to make your stay both authentic and enjoyable.

It takes a village

The Source is located in the small village of Cidadelhe, named after the ancient ruins of a pre-Roman citadel that sits atop the hill. Today, the village is a quiet, rural community. You’ll find a charming local church at its center, and while there are no shops or cafés within walking distance, you’ll hear the cheerful sounds of bread and fish delivery vans that visit the village.

They are conveniently situated between two main Douro Valley towns, Mesa Frio and Peso da Régua, and can arrange rides for guests who wish to explore.

Verpflegung

As much as possible, they source ingredients directly from their gardens and orchards so that the menus will vary and reflect the season’s best. This allows them to serve wholesome, vibrant meals that are as sustainable as they are delicious.

The menus are inspired by the culinary traditions of the Douro Valley, Northern Portugal, and Mediterranean regions, but they also like to draw inspiration from other world flavours.

They also like to offer a balance of buffet / family-style meals, as well as well-presented plated dishes. From hearty breakfasts, wholesome lunches, and beautiful candlelit dinners, the meals are designed to keep you feeling energized and satisfied throughout your stay.

Th Source Retreat is happy to support different needs with wholesome options, like plant-focused + dairy, eggs, fish, and meat, plant-focused + dairy, eggs, and fish, vegetarian (including dairy and eggs), vegan, gluten-free
