Elevated Yoga Teacher Training in Greece

Yoga Skyros International Academy is one of the first yoga academies to introduce a teacher training course with elevated Yoga Alliance standards of yoga teacher training certifications. Within these new standards is a shared core curriculum inclusive of lineage, style, and methodology. This curriculum includes a clear breakdown of 4 educational categories and 12 competencies encompassing respective sub-competencies all of which must be tested for integration and application of knowledge.

Students who complete the training are eligible to register with Yoga Alliance as Registered Yoga Teachers (RYT®).

Overview

Under these modernized and elevated standards, each RYS also assesses the knowledge, skills, and experience of its trainees prior to certifying them as 200-hour teachers against this core curriculum.

These new standards are designed to shed light on the full yoga science in-depth. You will be able to deliver and lead a substantial yoga class and open the vision to the professional aspects of yoga. It's also for students to elevate to the next level of opening their own school or work responsibly in a yoga studio. With this new teaching standards, the students will be enabled to teach yoga science confidently with a full understanding.

Curriculum

Technique, training, and practice

  • Definition of asana in general and each asana in particular. Students will learn how every meaning has historically been used as a tool to attain higher levels of energy
  • Names and Sanskrit meaning of over 40 asanas categorized as standing asanas, forward bend asana, twisting asana, backward bend asana, inversion asana, balancing asana, relaxation asana, and meditation asana
  • How to practice Surya Namaskar
  • Variations of the 40 asana categories: Standing asanas, forward bend asana, twisting asana, backward bend asana, inversion asana, balancing asana, relaxation asana, and meditation asana. Trainer will demonstrate the asana and request that students to practice each asana and relate it to its name
  • Create a complete asana class and guide others through it using the demonstrated asanas explained earlier
  • Shift the intensity and the speed of practice based on client's limitations
  • Use of props to engage their clients and make a successful class
  • Create special type of flows (all seated / all standing / backbend focus / hip opener focus / chakra focus)
  • Create a complete pranayama practice sequence and guide others through it
  • Create a complete meditation practice sequence and guide others through it
  • Importance of alignment in demonstrating the asanas safely
  • Describe the 3 anatomical planes, and discuss how asanas are movements within those planes. Students will practice all possible movements within these planes
  • Contraindications related to the yoga practice: The short term and long term
  • Origin of breathing techniques and their relation to mind activity
  • 3 phases of breathing in relation to the physical body
  • The complete pranayama sequence and how to lead students correctly during complete breath cycles and how to count rounds and assist students as well
  • Contraindications similar to blood pressure monitoring
  • Breath retention and breath elongation breathing techniques fully and learn to guide it to other students (Nadi Shodana different ratio breathing Ujayyi, Kapalabhati, Bhastrika)
  • Kosha, Klesha, Prana, Chakra, Nadis, Mudras and Bandhas. Students will learn to activate and balance their energies throughout the Nadis and directing attention to Sahasasra
  • Levels of consciousness in relation to conscious, subconscious, and unconscious mind
  • Different types of meditation: Vipassana, mindfulness, mantra meditation, and self inquiry
  • Mantra as a tool to facilitate deep meditation and learn techniques to calm the mind in meditation
  • Meaning of different mantras and the practice of bandhas and mudras
  • Levels of consciousness represented in the Om mantra

Anatomy, physiology, and biometrics

  • Anatomy of all 12 body systems highlighting the skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems
  • All joint types and the most common synovial joints, locations, alignment, and movement
  • Body muscles and relating them to the possible movements of muscles and the names of each movement. Students will also be expected to use these names in their classes including the movements
  • Muscle contraction and how to use them properly in a guided classroom
  • Physiology of all 12 body systems with focus on the nervous system and the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems
  • Physiology of the cardiovascular, circulatory, respiratory, endocrine ,and digestive systems. They need to understand the relation between chakras and organs and relate that to health and balance
  • Learn in-depth about the respiratory system and voluntary and involuntary breathing
  • Connection of breath control in relation to mental activity and meditation
  • Observe joint movement in yoga flow and learn how to utilize joint stability in cueing for a safe class
  • Purpose of joint stabilizing and learn to stabilize the joints during practice
  • Practice cueing with focus on using proper direction to joint stability and muscle stretching ability
  • Contraindications connected to the yoga practice related to body ability like pregnancy and neurological disorders

Yoga humanities

  • Meaning of the term yoga, the ancient origins of the practice of yoga, and the Kundalini energy awakening
  • Their school lineage is transformation Hatha yoga style and Swami Vidyananda base. They mainly focus on the development of equanimity by utilizing Kundalini energy and understanding the concept of non duality. Their school is strongly rooted in the teachings of Patanjali related to the stillness of the mind. Methodology will include asana, pranayama, and meditation on chakras using mantra
  • Different key dates related historical events and yoga related books. Students will discuss the literature that was produced at different historical phases
  • Read parts of literature ex: Bhagavad gita, the yoga sutras of patanjali, Hatha yoga pradipika, vedanta, and upanishads
  • Discuss the definition of the term yoga, the meaning of yoga in relation to chakra opening, and kundalini awakening
  • Connect the practice and training technique in relation to nadis, breathing, meditation, and practice
  • Read and discuss few important parts of major yogic texts such as - Bhagavad Gita - Hatha yoga Pradipika and the yoga Sutras of Patanjali
  • Discuss what they learned and practiced and will share their observation of the experience meditation after a full pranayama, asana, and meditation
  • Yoga sutras of Patanjali, in particular the 8 limbs of yoga
  • Yoga Alliance guidelines
  • Responsibility in sharing the yoga science and facilitating clients' progress in making better choices for their energies
  • Accountability measures in reflecting the yoga ethics onto life in general and onto class that is delivered to their client
  • Yoga ethics in relation to the philosophy of Karma

Elective – Buddhism

  • Buddhism, the purpose of Buddhism, the concept of enlightenment, and nirvana
  • Students will learn the 4 noble truths: The reality of suffering, how attachment originates suffering, and how there is a solution by following the eight-fold path for the cessation of suffering
  • Importance of wisdom, moral virtue, and meditation throughout leaning the noble eight-fold path

Professionals essentials

  • Sequencing structures and guidelines. They should be able to provide a full flow sequenced properly to be performed by practitioners safely
  • Verbal and cuing and will use it when they provide their class
  • Physical and emotional safety during the practice
  • Practice cuing
  • Class management while giving their classes. They will be required to control times, breathing, and attitude
  • Yoga alliance registration and progress in adding either more hours or specialization in pregnancy or children
  • Lead trainer will explain the code of conduct, scope of practice, and the equity position statement of the school
  • Students will discuss their interest to invest more time and energy in studying and practicing yoga. They will know more in-depth about the possibility to upgrade to 500-hour, get specific certifications specializing in kids or pregnancy
  • Professional guidelines that apply to the yoga business and clients relationship
  • Marketing, collaborations, and all tools to make the business known
  • Digital marketing and how to promote for new clients and prior existing clients
  • How to make a proper invoice, and learn the importance of accuracy and clarity in its contents. Students will write liability waivers and will discuss the importance of insurance in case of injury or damage and theft
  • Students will discuss the following concepts and how they reflect on the quality of services and their commitment to not only understanding the skills but also practicing them: The power of presence, ability to be empathetic, leadership, physical fitness, active listening skills, public speaking skills, customer service, flexibility, patience, good communication skills, professionalism, and punctuality
  • Meaning of feedback, mentorship, and apprenticeship
  • Qualities of a proper mentor and how to deliver constructive feedback and create a growth-driven environment

As of 22 October 2022, Yoga Skyros is happy to inform about their move to 16674 Glyfada, 113 Agisilaou, which is placed between the sea and the mountain - 2.5 kilometers to the sea and 0.5 kilometers to the Mountain Illias.

Glyfada is the South Part of Athens and is easy to find and easy to get into Athens as well. It is the Greek Riviera with high class walking and shopping, and restaurant of all cuisines. Within 300 meters, there are supermarkets and coffee shops, all necessary to spend your time between studying yoga and enjoying Greek lifestyle.

The Temple of Hatha Yoga remain the same; a beautiful yoga room with a wooden floor and balconies all around. The rooftop will host external yoga classes with a view of the sea.

Theodora Papadaki “Thera Design Studio” took care of the decoration. Theodora comes from Santorini with her fresh ideas and beautiful Greek smile. Welcome to their new Greek place where you can enjoy a lovely Winter and a beautiful Summer to study their different teacher trainings all year long with the masters.
