Morning practice

  • Led Ashtanga primary series (4 days per week)
  • Led Vinyasa yoga (2 days per week)
  • Pranayama (breathwork)
  • An introduction to meditation
  • Mantra chanting

During your morning practice with Edelweiss Yoga Chalet you will build up a practice in the Ashtanga primary series for 4 days per week. The aim of this element of the course is to equip you with an Ashtanga self-practice by the time you leave them. Therefore, you will begin with a modified version of the primary series and work your way through leading to Mysore-style practice towards the end of the course.

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is an invigorating and fast-paced style of yoga that Edelweiss Yoga Chalet feels is excellent for equipping students with a level of physical and mental discipline, resilience, and consistency. However, they are also aware that the practice can present limitations for some practitioners so they want you to feel assured that they provide lots of modifications to accommodate their students.

Their Vinyasa yoga classes will facilitate a more creative and expressive space for you within your practice as we explore both physical and philosophical intentions. These classes also punctuate their daily Ashtanga practices nicely.

Their pranayama (breathwork) module is an introduction to the power of your breath. For those who have never practiced breathwork, it is a little mind-blowing that there is such an art to something as simple as your breathing. These classes are a perfect blend of theory and practice so you can understand the full capacity of this superpower with plenty of time to get comfortable with the techniques and ask plenty of questions.

Meditation and mantra chanting are both techniques through which to still the mind and they will guide you through some simple techniques to begin practicing both.

Ultimately, they want you to come away from this training with an extensive toolbox of tips, tricks, and techniques that will assist you in cultivating a more peaceful, joyous life.

Yoga philosophy

Their philosophy module aims to contextualize a modern yoga practice in the lineage of this ancient tradition. You will explore the 8 limbs of Ashtanga yoga, the history and background of Ashtanga yoga, and facilitate debate and discussion on what it means to practice yoga on and off the mat. This module will offer insight into both traditional and modern spiritual teachings and practices in order to create a well-rounded understanding of what it means to be a yogi.

Teachers and teachings that will be explored in this course will include:

  • Patanajali’s Yoga Sutras
  • Gregor Maehle - Ashtanga Yoga
  • Byron Katie’s -The Work
  • Alan Watts - Out of your mind
  • Eckart Tolle- The Power of Now

Yoga anatomy and alignment

The learning objective of their yoga anatomy module is for students to have a functional understanding of the anatomy that is relevant to the postures of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. We want you to feel empowered with the knowledge to understand and overcome your limitations and develop a safe personal practice and confidence to guide others safely through theirs. Please know that this is not a doctor teacher training and so they will not expect you to memorize and understand extensive anatomical language and concepts but instead, practically embed knowledge of the way your bodies work into your own practice and teaching of your potential future students.

The alignment portion of this module will entail discussing, practicing, and observing the correct body positioning for Yoga Postures within the Ashtanga Vinyasa system. Classes are structured in such a way that you will have an opportunity to have your posture analyzed as well as analyze others’ postures which will equip you with a deeper understanding of correct skeletal alignment. Their anatomy curriculum will cover:

  • Movement of the hip, shoulder, spine, and knee joints
  • Origin and insertion to determine and understand muscle functionality
  • Shoulder and hip stability
  • Posture analysis in detail
  • Common injury prevention
  • Teaching methodology

There is most definitely an art to teaching and we want to facilitate a safe space in which you can discover your authenticity and build confidence in sharing what you have to offer to the world. And just before you doubt yourself, everybody has something to offer! You will be teaching pretty much from the get-go within this class building up your own Vinyasa yoga class step by step with plenty of time to practice, practice, practice.

Whether or not you plan to teach yoga after completing your 200-hour, this module has a lot to offer. Standing in front of a group of people and sharing a piece of yourself, your creativity, and your message is a profound practice that is truly transformational. These classes will guide you to improve self-confidence, public speaking, self-expression, and much more (if any of that scared you, all the more reason to sign up!
