Program

A Path to Your Essence

In this course you will work towards connecting with and understanding our nature as sat-chit-ananda: existence, awareness, and bliss. You will undertake a journey through the layers of your being, starting with the outermost physical body and moving to the most subtle part of yourself, connected with the divine.

The program is modeled on the koshas, or layers of your being, which will provide a structure and direction for your path, and help you explore a full range of yogic techniques to understand your identity. Incorporated into this journey is an exploration of what it means to be a Yoga teacher, what empassions and inspires you, and how you can better offer your knowledge and unique skills to others.

A Journey Within

The course is divided into two essential parts.

Part One: Immerse Yourself

You will join a month-long intensive at the Flying Tree Yoga studio in Medellín, where you will immerse yourself in your practice, learn new techniques, and refine your understanding of familiar concepts. This experience will culminate in a mini-retreat in the beautiful Colombian mountains, designed and run by the trainees.

Part Two: Integrate Your Practice

The course will continue with 3 months of ongoing support, meetings, and workshops online, which will provide an opportunity for you to fully explore and integrate these diverse practices into your teaching and daily life. Once you have completed the program you will have a fuller understanding of the path of Yoga, a fresh vision as a teacher, and a rich variety of new skills to share with your community.

This online support will be conducted via Zoom between July to September every Tuesday and Thursday evenings, 6 - 8 p.m. Colombia time (GMT-5), plus some select Saturdays to be confirmed. Please note that if you can’t attend one or more of the online meetings, recordings will be available for you to watch in your own time.

About the Training

At Flying Tree, they offer a fun, dynamic, and creative course, with an emphasis on empowering you to plan and deliver your classes to the public. They teach an alignment-based yoga that is suitable both for Vinyasa flows and for Restorative classes. From week one, they emphasize practical experience - that means practicing your teaching skills as a teacher on the Flying Tree team! You will be closely supported in small groups and carefully guided through your month's journey.

The course is designed to give you a thorough introduction to the traditional basis of yoga - its philosophy and rich history to examine where your yoga practice is taking you, and at the same time, to help you refine your teaching skills

  • Dynamic, practical, and fun, the training program is designed to help you explore your yoga path while empowering you to plan and deliver unique yoga classes
  • In the course you will learn to teach yoga with a focus on alignment, which can be adapted both for both vinyasa flows and restorative classes for a range of different students
  • The course is designed and guided by experienced professionals with a background in education
  • You will have plenty of opportunity to practice your teaching skills and begin your journey as a mentor to other Yoga teaches
  • Community is a hugely important aspect of the Flying Tree studio and you can meet and make friends with members of the local community!
  • The program at Flying Tree offers you the unique opportunity to follow your training with a month's internship and guided teaching, giving you practical experience in a studio setting and a professional reference on leaving! The internship is of course entirely optional and has a small additional fee

The Koshas: Layers of Being

The koshas are an ancient system that can help you understand your nature, from the physical to the energetic, mental, intellectual, and divine. In your course, you will journey through these layers and explore your essence.

  • Annamaya Kosha: The physical layer - Here you will work with asana, learning how to bring yourself into equilibrium through your physical practice. Combined with a study of anatomy, physiology, and biomechanics, you will explore how your practice can affect different systems in your body and keep them in good health. Through an examination of Ayurveda, you will learn about your constitution and how best to live in balance through patterns of diet, exercise, and rest.
  • Pranamaya Kosha: The energetic layer - Continuing your journey inwards you will examine the system of the nadis, or energy channels, as well as 5 prana vayus and how your energy moves through your bodies. This will be combined with techniques for managing your prana: pranayama and bandha, as well as a thorough study of the chakras and how energetic imbalances can manifest in your life.
  • Manomaya Kosha: The mind-body - Here you will examine the aspects of our thinking body, and careful cultivation of thought can help align the mind to move deeper within. In this part of your journey, you will include all aspects of study, theory, and teaching methodology, such as class creation, sequencing, management of the teaching environment, and how you can best communicate your yogic practice with others.
  • Vijñanamaya Kosha: The intellectual body - In your exploration of this layer of your existence, which helps you determine, discriminate, and calls you to deeper practice, you will include techniques of meditation and mantra, as well as an examination of yoga philosophy, how it can guide you and how it has evolved through the ages.
  • Anandamaya Kosha: Bliss body - As you reach the deepest layer of your being, you will explore techniques that help you express what is blissful, beautiful, and true in your life. From recitation of mantra to song, dance, and ritual, here you will express the joy that comes from being connected to your deepest self.
