The Sivananda Yoga Teacher Training Course (TTC) is the largest and longest-running Yoga Teacher Training in the West, with over 45k graduates worldwide since 1969. Join them for a month of inner transformation and deep immersion in a peaceful yogic lifestyle, all with the guidance and support of seasoned practitioners.
The Yoga Ranch was founded in 1974 by Swami Vishnudevananda to provide a peaceful retreat structured around a full immersion into Yogic living and nurtured with the natural beauty of the lush mountains. The simple living close to nature quiets the mind and prepares it for meditation and the high thinking of the Vedanta philosophy. Asanas (yoga postures), pranayama (breathing techniques), vegetarian meals, chanting, and working together in Karma yoga help complete the yoga experience.
The Yoga Ranch is an ashram with a very special spiritual atmosphere. To be here is to share in the practice together, honoring both our highest selves and that of others. In order to truly tap into all the rejuvenating effects of a yoga vacation, we encourage everyone to attend both Satsangs and yoga classes daily. We also ask that silence is observed from 10:30 pm to 6:00 am so that all can have a restful sleep and a peaceful mind before morning Satsang.
The more you can tune in and really soak in the natural peace of our environment and community, the better your body and mind will feel overall. You can begin by detaching from your cell phone, especially during Satsang. If using it as a recording device during the spiritual lecture (as it is a nice way to deepen your learning), just ensure that you have put it into silent/airplane mode and turned off all alarms and noise making apps before leaving your room. Inner peace is an amazing gift to share. Remember the practice.
Students who complete the training are eligible to register with Yoga Alliance as Registered Yoga Teachers (RYT®).
Founded in 1969 and launched here in Upstate New York in 1974, this Yoga Teachers Training Course is the oldest yoga teacher training in the West, educating over 40k teachers around the world to date. Join Sivananda Ashram Yoga Farm for a unique and profoundly transforming month-long teachers' training course.
Through hands-on learning and guidance, deepen your practice and gain the skills needed to teach yoga. The graduates receive an internationally recognized certification through the worldwide Yoga Alliance confirming they have the practical knowledge and experience to teach Hatha yoga (asanas, pranayama, and relaxation). The Sivananda Yoga Teachers’ Training Course includes the following:
Each day you will both study and engage in practical hands-on learning as the senior teachers guide you as to how to teach asanas and pranayama. The daily in-depth practice with individual corrections includes:
Pranayama, the science of breath control, consists of a series of exercises especially intended to keep the body and mind in vibrant health. In this study you will learn in detail about proper technique, its many benefits, and its advanced variations:
Meditation is both the main tool and the ultimate destination of yoga. This course focuses on japa meditation, or mantra repetition, as well as the power of positive thinking.
Responsible for building your physical body, the foods you eat also profoundly affect your mind, senses, and environment. Course topics and details include:
Yogic cleansing exercises, known as “kriyās” assist nature in removing waste products from our bodies. This cleansing is important as the Yogi regards their bodies as a vehicle in which to evolve toward higher consciousness. Learn and practice, with guidance, yoga kriyā exercises.
Yoga being mostly a system of self-experience, the purpose of this study is to improve the physical understanding of your own yoga practice and to apply it in your teaching practice as well.
In this section, you will be exploring the philosophy and aim of yoga. Look into the deeper dimensions of the mind, body, and spirit through the study of yogic philosophy and classical yoga text.
Kirtan is singing of God’s name, or the mantra, with devotion, love, and faith. Learn how it helps to calm the mind, purify the heart, and turn inward towards divine consciousness.
This 4-week course is styled after the ancient Gurukula system in which students live, study, and work with their teachers and fellow students in an ashram. For every idea the student understands, there will be a hundred that comes into the conscious mind only when the time is ready. The goal of the teacher's training program is to produce qualified and inspiring yoga teachers who are able to draw on their own practice and personal discipline while imparting the yoga experience to others.
As an integral component of this course, for one month you will immerse yourself in and study the lessons of the Four Paths of Yoga. Learning within the Gurukula system, students transform detailed Yogic theory into practical, on-the-ground understanding.
The practice of selfless service helps to reduce selfishness and egoism and keeps you fit, healthy, and joyful. Learn the Karmic principles behind the law of action and Reaction and the wheel of birth and death.
Bhakti yoga, the yoga of devotion, teaches how to open the heart and purify the mind. Discover kirtan (chanting of classical Sanskrit mantras), Indian gods/goddesses and their energetic meaning, and other traditional Indian rituals.
Also known as Ashtanga Yoga, this is the science of mental and physical control where meditation is the chief practice. Discover the effects and experiences of meditation, how to meditate, the use of mantras, and how to cultivate concentration.
Explore the Yoga of Knowledge and the concepts of Vedanta philosophy such as space, time, and causation, the difference between the physical and energetic bodies, and also the subconscious, conscious, and superconscious mind.
The practice, and especially the teaching of yoga, demand a high degree of self-discipline and virtue. To ensure the success of the program, participants are required to attend all spiritual activities, meditation sessions, lectures, and asana classes.
Basic knowledge of yoga postures and philosophy is helpful but not essential. A sincere desire to learn and openness to the teachings of Yoga is all that is required. Meat, fish, eggs, black tea, coffee, alcohol, tobacco, drugs, and nudity are prohibited during the course (and in the ashram) as they are counterproductive to yoga practice. Participants who do not comply with the ashram rules may be dismissed from the course.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to cater to personal dietary preferences beyond yogic-vegetarian meals.
Swami Dharmananda is one of the main teachers of Hatha yoga and meditation at the ashram. He took sannyasa vows in 2013 and is the assistant director of Sivananda Ashram Yoga Farm. Swami Dharmananda is keenly interested in yoga psychology and philosophy, presenting the classical teaching in a practical and accessible way to people of all faiths and backgrounds.
Swami Sitaramananda is a senior disciple of Swami Vishnudevananda, who is a direct disciple of Swami Sivananda. She was nominated an acharya by him in 1989 and is presently the acharya of United States West Coast Centers and Ashrams as well as Asia, especially Vietnam and China. She has been the director of the Sivananda Ashram Yoga Farm for more than 20 years and has taught many international teacher training courses in California, Vietnam, China, Taiwan, and India, and is also teaching regularly at Sivananda Ashram Yoga Retreat, Nassau, Bahamas.

He took the first monastic vow from Sivananda lineage in 2011. He has also been traveling to Chengdu, China to help teach the teacher training course there.
All meals are included. Meat, fish, eggs, black tea, coffee, alcohol, tobacco, drugs, and nudity are prohibited during the course (and in the ashram) as they are counterproductive to yoga practice. Participants who do not comply with the ashram rules may be dismissed from the course.

Although there are several airports in the greater New York City area, and they all have shuttle/transit service to New York’s Port Authority, the one Sivananda Ashram Yoga Farm recommends is LaGuardia Airport for its being the easiest in getting to the Port Authority and then taking the bus to the Sivananda Yoga Ranch.
Traveling to the Ranch by the Shortline bus takes roughly 2.5 hours. The trip requires two bus tickets: one ticket from New York City to Monticello and another ticket from Monticello to Woodbourne. The cost is roughly 34 USD total for the two tickets (68 USD round-trip).
For the guests’ convenience, Sivananda Ashram Yoga Farm happily offers both pickup and drop-off shuttle services from the Citgo bus stop in Woodbourne.
Your initial bus trip purchase from NYC onto Woodbourne can be made at the Port Authority in NYC. Your return bus trip can be purchased there as well, or here – at a 10% discount to what it costs in the City.
Already made it to the Port Authority? Great. Please visit Coach USA ticket windows 11-15 located on the Main Ticket Plaza (1st floor of the South Wing), and let the bus services ticket agent know you’d like to purchase a bus trip through Monticello onto Woodbourne (two tickets: 34 USD).
Once you complete the first leg of the trip and arrive in Monticello, please give Sivananda Ashram Yoga Farm a call to let us know. The next bus ride from Monticello to Woodbourne is a local route, making stops at places like Walmart, the gas station, and the grocery store. Please let the bus driver know that you want to get dropped off at the Citgo gas station in Woodburne, and welcome to living in a small town!
Sivananda Ashram Yoga Farm will be waiting for you at the bus stop. If for any reason you arrive and their shuttle service isn’t there waiting to greet you, please give us a quick call and we will be right there to pick you up.
