Sivananda Ashram Yoga Ranch

Sivananda Ashram Yoga Ranch is an ashram located in New York. It offers yoga retreat and yoga teacher training based on Shwami Sivanandas teaching of yoga of synthesis.

Yoga Alliance certified teacher training

Since 1969, when Swami Vishnu-devananda created the first Yoga Teacher Training Course ever taught in the West, there have been more than 29,000 Yoga Teachers certifed by the International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centers.

Swamiji designed the Yoga Teacher Training Course to closely approach the ancient Gurukhula System, in which the student's daily life was itself an intensive Yoga training. The course is registered with the Yoga Alliance at the 200 hour level, and graduates become certified Yoga instructors.

Most accommodations for your New York yoga teacher training are in simple shared rooms, with separate, shared bathrooms. There are some single rooms, again with separate, shared bathrooms. Tenting is also welcome.

Sivananda Ashram Yoga Ranch is located in New York.

During teacher training course (200-hour yoga teacher training) in New York, you will have only limited free time. So, you may not have a lot of time to do extra activities. Please also note that attendance in all activities during the course are mandatory. Below are a couple of activities offered at the Ashram that you can avail of on your free time.

Ayurveda Consultations

An Ayurveda Consultation consists of an 1 - 2 hour meeting between you and the practitioner to explore your unique constitution (Prakruti) and evaluate the signs and causes of potential or actual imbalances (Vikruti).

The practitioner uses direct questions along with observation of tongue, pulse, voice, body structure and movement during this session. You will come away with practical, affordable and accessible recommendations to implement physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual well-being through Yoga practices and five sense therapies.

The emphasis is always on how you can apply self-knowledge and self-care to support your unique journey in this life!

The Ayurveda consultation costs 150 USD and includes a two page Ayurveda lifestyle plan and additional information specific to you.

Panchakarma (Five Actions)

Panchakarma is a process for releasing toxins and disturbed dosha from the body followed by rejuvenation. The Panchakarma process consists of three phase; Purva Karma, Pancha Karma and Paschat Karma. Each phase is equally important.

Purva Karma is a preparatory phase, usually done at home. It is designed to soften and loosen the toxins in body. It consists of a restricted diet, daily internal and external oleation, self massage and other individually prescribed practices. This phase takes one week minimum.

Pancha Karma (or panchakarma), the actual five actions of cleansing, are done in residence at the Yoga Retreat and the Yoga Ranch. These may include purgation and enemas. These are supported by a mono diet fast, cleansing herbs, asana, pranayama, meditation, silence, journalling, spending time in nature and rest.

Paschat Karma, the rejuvenation phase, includes the reintroduction of an appropriate balancing diet and an appropriate daily ayurvedic routine along with internal and external oleation. This phase lasts at least a week and may be completed at home.

The process requires a two to three week commitment; the preparatory phase at home, the 5 - 7 days in residence at the Retreat / Ranch and the rejuvenation phase at home. All this is done under the one to one guidance of a practitioner.

Panchakarma is a sacred process that has profound healing effects on all levels of being; body, mind, emotions and spirit. It allows us to remember our true nature as Divine.

Ayurveda body treatments

Abhyanga: An Abhyanga applies a combination of organic seed oils and essential oils or herbs, selected specifically for you, to the body-mind. The oil is applied by a single practitioner with light friction and gentle pressure with specific strokes designed to stimulate, clear and balance the energy patterns of your body-mind. The treatment stimulates lymph and blood circulation and supports hormonal balance. It helps strengthen all the tissues of the body thereby supporting the immune system. And, it feels wonderful!

Ayurveda oil body treatments (bliss therapy): The treatments consist of a brief assessment, an Abhyanga and either a Shirodhara or Nasya treatment and ends with a sauna and shower. The Sanskrit word Sneha translates as both love and oil or fat. Ayurveda has for centuries used warm oil treatments to purify and nourish the body-mind-senses. These treatments clear and balance the energy points (Marma) and channels (Nadi). They also balance the patterns of energy movements (Vayu) in the body-mind. This allows for the free flow of the body-minds innate intelligence bringing awareness, harmony and self-healing.

Nasya: A Nasya is a treatment of the face and nasal passages, using specially formulated organic oils and gentle heat. Herbal oil drops are applied into the nose, which Ayurveda sees as the doorway to the brain and mind. Energy points (Marma) are stimulated and lymph is encouraged to flow. Nasya clears obstructions in the sinuses, relieves tension, pacifies nerves and clarifies mental processes. It can also alleviate insomnia, sinus conditions and ringing in the ears.

Shirodhara: A Shirodhara is the application of a slow, fine stream of warm organic oil continuously poured on the third eye, then flowing over the forehead and scalp. Once again, the oil is mixed especially for you. This treatment calms the mind by inducing slower brain wave function (Theta), which allows for deep relaxation. It also relieves tension and discomfort in the head, neck and shoulders. Shirodhara can alleviate headaches, anxiety, nervousness and other stress related symptoms. It allows for expanding awareness and produces feelings of well-being, balance and joy.

Therapeutic treatments

Hot stone therapy: Hot stone therapy melts away tension, eases muscle stiffness and increases circulation and metabloism. Each Hot Stone session features the placement of smooth, water-heated stones at key points on the body to allow for deeper relaxation of the muscles. Our professional massage therapists then incorporate a customized massage, with the use of hot stones and oil with aromoatherapy, to create a healing and relaxing experience. Hot Stone Therapy session costs 140 USD for 90 min: 90 minutes, $140

Thai yoga therapy: Thai bodywork originated in India and is based on Ayuveda and Yoga. The technique combines massage with Yoga-like positions during the course of the session. Thai Yoga Therapy is perfomred on a mat on the floor, both client and practitioner are dressed in comfortable clothing allowing ease of movement and flexibility. No oils or creams are used. Thai massage techniiques use the thumbs, elbows, palms, forearms, feet, and knees. It includes rocking, rythmic muscle compression, assisted yoga positions and stretching, working along energy meridians to completely relax and rejuvenate the client. Thai yoga therapy session costs 140 USD for 90 min

Therapeutic bodywork: Therapeutic bodywork promotes overall health, enhances your yoga practice and supports a healthy lifestyle. Healing sessions are custom tailored to each client's particular needs. Our caring and knowledgeable therapists are experienced in a wide variety of bodywork modalities. We will combine Western and Eastern metods, ancient and modern, to suite the needs and desires of the individual. Therapeutic bodywork has a profound effect on the whole person; calming the nervous system, improving circulation and strengthening the immune system. It is a powerful way to relax and heal. Therapeutic bodywork sessions costs 90 USD for 60 min | 120 USD for 90 min

Therapeutic conditioning: therapeutic conditioning sessions are designed to teach you how to work with any movement related difficulties. They offer support with spinal pain, joint pain, neck pain, muscle or skeletal injuries and movement restrictions in any particular yoga asana or daily life. Personalized attention is given to your specific issues. Suggestions for individualized core strength and cardiovascular programs will be included. Therapeutic Conditioning costs 75 USD for 45 min with 15 minute follow up.

The ashram is 100 miles from New York City.

Take 87N (the NY Thruway) to exit 16 (Hwy 17 West, the first Catskills exit), to Monticello exit 105B (Hwy 42N), and go 12 miles north to Woodbourne.

At Woodbourne continue straight 3/4 miles on 52 to Budd Road (behind the Woodbourne Fire Station), on the left.

The Yoga Ranch is 2.5 miles up Budd Road, on the right.

    "I joined my yoga teacher training in June, 2015 and would definitely say that the experience has been life changing.     "After reading The Autobiography of Swami Sivananda and visiting the center in NYC, I knew I had to visit the ranch. My very first visit to the ranch last weekend was more than I ever dreamed it to be. From the moment I entered the main building, I felt welcomed and safe. The staff was warm and friendly and always available. The rooms were basic and clean, and offered reading material!!! The boutique was stocked with various books, male beads, candles, healthy snacks, deity statues, clothing and much more! Our days were structured and full - which is part of the practice of being disciplined and mindful. Each satsang began with a meditation, followed by al kirtan (the staffs voices were beautiful!) and ending with a spiritual talk! The asana classes followed a Sivananda flow, but were adjusted for the beginners who had visited the ranch that weekend. The grounds were beautiful and I really enjoyed the mindful hike through the property. The Shiva temple at the top of the hill was a wonderful place to spend quiet time in meditation.Last but not least THE FOOD!!!!!!!!!! Was abundant, fresh, organic and truly delicious!I can't wait to visit again! I let the weekend feeling BLISSFUL!"

    "The yoga ranch is my home away from the city. When I need some quiet time, solo time, rejuvenation, I go to the ashram. It's perfect for a day or a month or longer. It's easy to get to from NYC via bus or car and takes a few hours. The staff is always helpful answering questions on everything from programs to rooms to transportation. Oh and the food is amazing. Healthy, filling, tasty - I crave the food. The meditation and set program each day is helpful to get a rhythm going. I can do yoga, hike, enjoy the steam room, read, chill, relax and meet folks from all over the world. It's my favorite place to reflect and re-center. Thank you!"

    "I can't imagine better place anywhere to unwind, go inside, and feel good! All the staff are fantastic. Their organic vegetarian meals are from another dimension. The sky was blue and clear. The fresh air was beyond description. The rustic, wood-burning sauna was the cherry on the cake!"

    "I recently spent a month at the Yoga Ranch for the Teacher Training Course. The training was excellent. It definitely strengthened my own practice of yoga and meditation, but even more, I developed a better knowledge of the Vedanta, Sanskrit and philosophies. The facilities are not luxurious, but this actually keeps you focused on the teachings and the beautiful surroundings. The food is delicious. The people who work and teach at the Ranch are knowledgeable and great to be around."

    "A bit of advice for those not familiar with Sivananda yoga: come with an open mind. During my first experience with Sivananda, I was a bit overwhelmed by all the chanting and spirituality. (My yoga background up to that point had involved hip hop yoga classes in Boston, often followed by a pint.) Despite my initial skepticism, I've found that I keep coming back. Their philosophy offers a holistic path toward happiness: proper exercise, proper breathing, proper relaxation, proper diet, meditation and positive thinking. It's a philosophy that people from any faith can agree with, and the New York ranch is the perfect place to experience it. The nature is divine, the food is delicious, and the yoga is simultaneously relaxing and energizing.It is true about the old buildings and the squeaky floors, but after a full day of activities (5:30 a.m. - 10:00 p.m.), I slept like a rock. The bathrooms are clean, the hot water works, they have a sauna, and the all-volunteer staff were very friendly and welcoming. They also had guests of all ages and all levels of yoga experience, which made for a nice diverse group.I went during the winter months when there were fewer guests. It's likely a lot busier in the summer, which can be good or bad, depending on your preferences. "

    "First, be mindful this is an Ashram not a resort. You are there to experience the yogic lifestyle they offer to include the meditation, chanting, and lessons. I took the cooking workshop with Neeti on Indian Spices. The food was wonderful and she was an excellent teacher. I checked in Friday and stayed through Sunday Morning. Saturday runs from 6AM to 9PM at night so it is a long day but I left his place feeling more relaxed than I ever have in my life. I had only been exposed to Bikram Yoga prior to this weekend and had never experienced meditation. Everyone at the Ashram to include the guests were friendly. The atmosphere is totally laid back and the vegetarian food (I am a meat eater) was ABSLUTELY delicious. The volunteers spend hours preparing the two daily meals. It is true the dorms are loud - these are very old camp buildings with thin walls so if you are a light sleeper bring ear plugs, but the beds are very comfortable. The lessons during Satsang were wonderful and you can attend Satsang at any of their locations for free. I will definitely incorporate a visit to this Ashram at minimum once a year and I took home knowledge that will improve my health and wellbeing for a life time."
