We believe that a quality yoga practice needs to be built on a grounded, embodied understanding of the core principles of practice. Our trainings begin slowly by creating a lot of structure that is accessible both physically and mentally for all students, no matter what their level of ability. At first we concentrate on the alignment of the postures and the cultivation of breath. Students get a lot of individual attention, receiving ongoing alignment adjustment within the morning asana practice so that they can refine the quality and longevity of their own poses. These early stages of the course also build the physical strength and flexibility required to move toward more complex expressions of asana with ease and safety.
Learning the fundamentals will not only improve the quality of your practice, it is also essential for teaching yoga. It is vital for teachers to have a clear, embodied knowledge of the foundations of asana, and how to make each posture accessible to all students. Regardless of their level of experience, all participants benefit from a more detailed look at the essence of the practice.
The breath forms the other essential part of the foundation practices. Breath is a major focus of the course and is cultivated daily through our unique Swara Yoga breath system. This system teaches a full scope of Pranayama techniques, and also begins with the very basics of the practice. We pride ourselves on delivering the very best training in Pranayama available in a 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training Course.
Our day begins and ends with meditation. Meditation is an essential part of a comprehensive yoga practice. The course explores a variety of accessible and powerful meditation techniques to develop inner calm, insight, clarity and wisdom. Many of our meditations are based on the 5 Elements of yoga: Stability, Flow, Intensity, Movement and Emptiness. Other techniques are also utilized such as those based on witnessing, visualization or using sounds such as mantras. These meditations source from the lineages of traditional Tantra, Buddhism & Taoism. Some meditations are active, some seated, and we offer regular practice of Yoga Nidra for deep restoration.
Breath is one of the primary elements of yogic practice, and the practice of pranayama is considered to be more powerful than asana. However, comprehensive breath systems are rarely taught in classes or even in other teacher trainings. Our system of breath, called Swara Yoga, is one of the most accessible and comprehensive breath systems available today. Not only is Swara profoundly simple to practice it is incredibly easy to teach. Swara Yoga is designed to give students of all levels easy access to the profound power of yogic breathing and builds the foundation to practice advanced pranayama techniques which are also taught in this course.
During this course we offer daily dedicated Pranayama classes which include our unique Swara Yoga system of rhythmic movement and breath, along with the seated practice of pranayama.
We also teach a series of lectures discussing breath philosophy and the full spectrum of pranayama practices in detail including: Ujaii, Antara, Bhaya & Kevala Kumbhaka, Viloma, Kapalabatti, Bastrika, Nowli Kriya, Anulom Vilom, Chandra & Surya Bhedana, Nadi Shodhana, Sama & Visama Vritti.
Many of our graduate students say that the pranayama practice taught by Swara Yoga introduced them to some of the most profoundly transformative practices that they have encountered. If you are interested in the study of Pranayama, you should not overlook this 200 Hour Yoga Training.
We generally practice with a ‘Slow Flow’ Vinyasa style of asana, which is based on alignment, awareness and breath. We practice sustainable yoga and we begin our trainings with very gentle practice which slowly builds the strength and flexibility required to approach challenging postures. Students are asked to guide their own development by practicing at the intensity level that suits them. In this way, students learn how to take care of themselves and listen to their own inner wisdom, instead of just taking orders from a teacher. The activation of inner wisdom is one of the primary goals of our program. It takes intelligence from the practitioner to know when it is appropriate to work intensely and when it is right to rest, in order to maximize the benefits of their practice, building energy & vitality and avoiding injury and burnout.
We offer daily alignment adjustment for the majority of this course to ensure that our students build a safe personal practice and have an embodied understanding of each posture. Each afternoon we have an ‘Asana Lab’ in which postures from the morning practice are revisited and broken down including the discussion of anatomy, modifications & use of props, and Sanskrit and western terminology. These classes also include teaching practice in 1 to 1 situations which evoke detailed group discussions and dispel confusion relating to alignment.
The more intense postures such as headstand, backbends and arm balances are also explored in depth. We teach a step by step process so that students can develop postures that may be currently beyond their ability. This step by step method helps students understand the steps necessary to progress. This is useful both for personal practice and for teaching others how to get into poses. We provide a printed asana manual which includes this step by step process of over 100 yoga asana as a teaching and study guide.
We strongly believe that the world needs more people who are passionate and dedicated to their yoga practice, people who can share accessible yoga with those around them. Yoga has become a modern antidote for the over-stimulated and disconnected populations of people who are in search of a means to feel connected, healthy and balanced.
The art of teaching yoga is a practice unto itself and requires a clear and open voice, strong knowledge of alignment & breath, creative sequencing, knowledge of modification and adjustment, and the ability to hold a transformative space. This program addresses all of these and many more requirements in order to deliver the foundations for anybody who wants to effectively share yoga.
Swara Yoga Academy is unique in the way that we approach the teaching of sequencing. They do not deliver you ‘cut and dry’ asana sequences because they feel that set sequences inhibit your ability to be spontaneous and respond to the needs of your students.
They believe that teachers need to understand the energetic qualities of each posture, and how to arrange their own sequences so that a class flows in an energetic pattern which is intelligently balanced. Every Swara Yoga class is totally different, but every class follows the same energetic map. It is this map that they will share with you, so that your teaching will be an innovative exploration which evolves over time and which may be inclusive of practices learned from other teachers as well. Through this approach, you will start to understand the practice of asana in profound new ways.
They offer consistent teaching practice, usually in one-on-one or small group settings. This daily practice of bite-sized teaching exercises encourages students to explore the awkward first stages of learning how to teach within a loving, private and supportive workshop environment. Here, they look at the alignment of the postures in depth so that students know how to build and teach the asanas in a step-by-step fashion so teachers can guide students of all levels & abilities. They also feature their breath method, called Swara Yoga, which is a system that enables teachers to teach breath practices to students easily and effectively.
Overall, the program is a comprehensive approach that makes it easy for students to begin their journey of yoga teaching with confidence and intelligence, and which offers existing teachers the opportunity to refine their skills with new insight and clear guidance.
It is their aim that all students of this course are able to share their yoga practice - professionally or playfully. They teach a creative structure for sequencing asana classes which empowers students creatively. Daily teaching activities are used to help students clarify their learnings and get in touch with the teacher within.
Yoga teacher training classes are held on every day except Saturday. The course price includes all classes, class materials, and breakfasts on class days.

The fastest way to The Sanctuary on Haad Tien is to take the Thong Nai Pan Supply Boat from the beach in front of Hotel Anjali, which is near to the Maenam Chinese Temple in Mae Nam Beach. This boat leaves once daily at 11:45 a.m. and you may buy your ticket on the boat itself, or from any of the street vendors nearby. The price is 300 baht to Haad Tien. The Thong Nai Pan Supply Boat arrives directly into Haad Tien beach in front of The Sanctuary at 1:30 p.m.
The Thong Nai Pan Supply Boat does not leave from Maenam Pier. It leaves from the beach in front of Hotel Anjali. You can take the shared taxi from the Samui Airport and just tell your driver you are going to Hotel Anjali. Do not tell them you are taking a ferry as most drivers do not know about this very convenient little boat and will take you to a different pier.
If your flight does not arrive in time to catch the Thong Nai Pan Boat, you should take the Shared Taxi from the airport to Big Buddha Pier, where you will take The Haad Rin Queen which will take you to Haad Rin Beach.
As you get off the boat in Haad Rin, people with taxi boat signs will ask you where you are going and you tell them you are coming to The Sanctuary. The price for these long-tail boats is usually 300 baht per person for a shared boat, but they may ask for more if you are alone, depending on the time of day. Don’t pay more than 600 baht to take the boat alone. It is a 10 minute ride and will drop you in front of The Sanctuary.
Your third option from Koh Samui is to arrange a private speed boat direct from Koh Samui to Haad Tien. To arrange a private boat please contact The Sanctuary
