Agonda Om Yoga Kutir

The yoga school is located on a small hill, overlooking lush green farmlands. The hillock on which the school is built has an abundant plantation of coconut, cashew, jackfruit, and papaya trees. The yoga school has comfortable and newly refurbished accommodation.

They have dorm rooms, shared rooms, and private rooms that can suit all budgets. The school has a beautiful purpose-built yoga shala that can accommodate up to 20 students at a time. The shala is built at an elevated location on the hill.

The atmosphere and yogic vibes are great, away from the hustle-bustle of the beach but close enough to hear the ocean while you start your day with meditation. Apart from that, the property is often visited by the beautiful languors, eagles, kingfisher, cows, buffaloes, and peacocks. There are also termite mounds in the gardens to show how ancient and rural this land is.

A typical day during your course

During your training, you will have an opportunity to live by the rhythm of nature. The yoga training schedule begins at 6.15 a.m. with a short morning prayer followed by a pranayama session.

Then comes the morning session for the traditional yoga postures (Hatha yoga) before breakfast. You have two main sessions; one philosophy and the other yoga anatomy followed by lunch at noon.

There will be some self-study and self-practice time, before you begin the afternoon and evening sessions of Vinyasa yoga asanas followed by relaxation and meditation.

There will be some inspirational cultural activities, such as satsang (devotional songs), lectures on yoga related subjects, audios, and video lectures.

The weekly assignments will be part of the training as that is conducive to gain in-depth knowledge of the subjects and experience through your yoga practices. During this yoga teacher training you will be provided with three yoga vegetarian meals including fruit refreshments and green tea.

The Yoga Cave Initiative encourage the students to go to sleep early about 10 p.m., as that is conducive to the yoga training. This is a holistic course that gives you a diverse introduction to a full yoga teacher training course.

You will be introduced to mantra chanting, cleansing techniques, breathing or pranayama techniques. Asana in different styles to give you diversity in your practice. You will learn about bandhas, mudras, and sholkas.

Overview of Course Curriculum - What to Expect

From ancient times sages, swamis, seekers, priests saints, and sadhus have been coming to India to experience the divine promise, the nectar of spirituality and a flavor of authentic yoga asana from Indian gurus.

Given the diversity of the experience of The Yoga Cave initiative teachers, no day will be the same. The morning classes will be two hours long and usually will be sequence driven. The evening asana class and teaching methodology class will be your opportunity to go deep into every asana and learn the variations and methods to teach.


You will start your day with either mantra recitation or some form of meditation or pranayama. You will be introduced to the science of mantra chanting, The Yoga Cave Initiative will teach you basic popular mantras, morning and evening mantras, meal prayers, shlokas, bija mantras and surya namaskar mantras.

You will feel the essence of bhakti yoga in the morning with your chanting and mantra sessions.

Yoga Asana (Hatha and Ashtanga)

Yoga Asana is an important part of yogic life and thus you will do a lot of asana practice during your course. You will learn:

  • Step by step explanation of how to go in a posture, how to center your concentration in the posture, how to breathe in a posture, and how to come out of the posture the classical and western way.
  • You will explore many different types and styles of surya namaskar to give you diversity in your daily practice.
  • You will learn different mantras associated with different steps of surya namaskar.
  • You will learn most of the fundamental yoga postures taught internationally, you will also learn variations and names of the postures in Sanskrit. You will learn the therapeutic benefits of each asana.

During your course, you will learn

In the west yoga is usually looked at as a flow or movement-based "thing". However, in India for 1000s of years, yoga has been practiced with strong static postures. Hatha yogis of timeless Natha or Naga traditions have often been known to just practice one static posture for the entire life. Prathabi Jois himself designed the primary and secondary series of sequence, which is known as "Ashtanga yoga class" in the west. At Agonda Om Yoga Kutir (the ashram in Goa), The Yoga Cave Initiative aspires to give you the most authentic and blissful experience of classical yoga.

During your course, you will explore how to thread one posture to another posture. The art of moving from one posture to another is known as "Vinyasa". They will teach you the art of Vinyasa and how to thread your postures to create sequences in a way where your practice of yoga becomes like a dance or moving meditation. This art will enable you to formulate your own sequence in a safe and systematic manner.

Abhyasya Vairagyam

Vairagyam often is referred to as a state of renunciation or detachment that one enters when they participate in intense spiritual austerities like yoga, fasting, and ecstatic dancing. In Patanjali yoga sutra, it has been stated that the key to enter the state of Samadhi through yoga is to experience "Abhayasa Vairagyam".

This is a state of mind that a yogi can enter during the intense practice of yoga. During your course, they will encourage you to live a holistic lifestyle that will assist you in experiencing abhyasa vairagyam. They will teach you how to align and connect breath (Ujjayi), and movement to create a practice that will transform your current yoga practice to the next level.

Pranayama and meditation

Every morning your day will start with some form of pranayama, meditation, or Satsang. They will explore all common as well as not so common pranayamas and meditation techniques like Kapalabhati, Ujjayi breath, Nadi Shodhana. You will often chant Sanskrit mantras and om chanting in the morning.

Arrival by airplane

Please book your flight to arrive at Goa International Airport (GOI). The transfer from and to this airport is available at an additional cost.

There is a direct flight from London to Goa, otherwise, you can get a direct flight to Mumbai and Bangalore take a short-haul flight from there direct to Goa. Other major European cities often fly direct flights to Goa. The school is about 90 minutes from the airport. Agonda beach is world-famous and you should have no problem finding them.
