Equip yourself with the skills and confidence to teach Kundalini yoga online and in-person. This curriculum flows with ease into your life, right where you are at, with no imposition on your current commitments. This online yoga teacher training is a foundational training, and will allow you to first experience the potency and potential of these practices for yourself. You will be given time to integrate these practices in your own body prior to learning to teach, if that is your intention.
Students who complete their training are eligible to register with Yoga Alliance as Registered Yoga Teachers (RYT®).
This time of staying home and turning within has created higher tension and higher anxiety for many. This means that the need for skilled, competent, and trauma-informed yoga teachers in communities around the world has never been greater.
One of the things that is great about Kundalini is that it’s an accessible practice for all body types, ages, and experience levels. It’s also part of the mission at YFI to ensure that no one experiences barriers between themselves and yoga practice.
YFI recommends you participate live as much possible, as this is the main area for live teaching, and watch the replay each week if you miss a session.
They also will hold many weekly ‘office hours’, on Zoom, where your specific questions can be discussed in a smaller group with your teachers.
It’s totally fine if you aren’t done with your self-study (non-contact hours) components by the end of the live classrooms as you have a full year to complete your testing and evaluation, with unlimited yoga classes, office hours, video replays, and group support the entire time.
With the program for a full year, you’ll have access to all course materials, resources and yoga classes, including YTT videos, classroom replays, live and on-demand yoga, office hours, cue rehearsals, the Google Classroom, and private Facebook group.
The live classroom trainings will be held:
All classes are recorded so you can participate later that day or another day if you work during this time. Other weekly optional classes are to be announced and included in the tuition.
In order to develop the curriculum in this program, lead educators looked at the western Kundalini texts and compared them to texts on Laya yoga, Naad yoga, Kriya yoga, and Tantra. They then developed a modern approach that commits to trauma informed language, cuing, and ethics.
This modern, feminine form methodology and curriculum is the distilled wisdom of years of experience, research, and training. The teachings date back to the 6th century and are backed up by modern science and anatomical knowledge.
The approach to the body in this program is also a combination of Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine. Kundalini yoga predates Yogi Bhajan, and this history will be honored, taught, and discussed in the program. You will focus on Kriya yoga, Laya yoga, and Naad yoga from as early as 500 BC to the 7th century, as well as more recent derivations of the practices.
Students will be given an opportunity to explore the eight limbs of yoga and how yoga asana is often the entry point into deeper yogic practices. Although you focus on asana in the West, there is so much more to yoga practice than the physical components.
Students will be guided through the entire arc and flow of a Kundalini Warrior Class, including the movement practice, pranayama, savasana meditation, and seated chanting meditation with mudra. They will be guided weekly through this practice for the entire program and have an opportunity for Q&A about the practice at the end of class.
Students will practice the poses in the Kundalini Warrior Yoga set which includes practices from the Vinyasa and the Kundalini yoga tradition.
Using the Kundalini Warrior Yoga set students will be offered a variety of adaptations, alignment awareness and contraindications to poses as they practice yoga and are guided by the trainers. They will be guided through the practices and have time to share experiences at the end of practice.
Students will be guided through a series of mantra and meditation practices where the chant is broken down, pronunciation is practiced, transliteration is looked as as well as translation of words and intention. Students will learn Buddhist, Sheik, and English style mantras; including and not limited to Taras mantra, Sri Argala Strotam, the morning call or Adi mantra, Biij (seed) mantras, Mangala Charan mantra. In these classes that weave together lecture, practice, and personal reflection time students will understand the method of sound meditation and its rich history and efficacy.
Students will break into small groups and guide each other through the mantras and meditation scripts provided. They will give each other feedback, the trainers will observe the small group practices and give feedback as required.
Students will be guided through a workshop that breaks down mantras and their accompanying mudras. With an overall understanding and lecture of how mantra is a sound current and the mudra serves almost like a magic wand to direct the energy. Students will practice using both in the exploratory workshop.
Students will be guided through; Ujjaii breath, Sitali Breath, Breath of Fire, Nadi Shodhana, and Kapalabhati with a concentrated amount of time understanding the difference in the techniques between Breath of Fire and Kapalabhati. Students will practice these pranayama guided by the lead trainer and reflect on how those practices affect their bodies. Additionally it will be discussed when the appropriate time during class is for guiding these practices.
Students will hear the various lineages, and teachings around breath practices. Varying perspectives from different traditions and what the ultimate goal was of pranayama, a meditative state. You will then discuss how there are many benefits to pranayama practices and that this is often an area that new yoga teachers are the most shy about and it is important to move through that discomfort and offer these practices in class.
Using lecture format and the guidance of the Enlightened Bodies Textbook and a closer look at the respiratory system and cardiovascular system students will begin to understand some modifications and adaptations to safer pranayama practices. Students will understand complete pranayama sequencing to include; setting an intention (purpose of practice), warming up to the breath practice, deeper practicing, connection, surrender and flow, calm and closing. They will understand why Kapalabhati and Breath of Fire are contraindicated for pregnancy and hypertension.
Using lecture and the Essential Bodies Textbook students will be guided through understanding how pranayama affects the gross and subtle body. For example; as you inhale, the contracting diaphragm descends on the organs below, creating pressure. As a result, the thoracic cavity expands and the abdominal cavity contracts (again this is the basic explanation and exploration)
When you exhale, the diaphragm relaxes and releases upward as the ribcage relaxes inward, allowing for a counter-intuitive spaciousness in the abdomen (you then will break this down by trying it and feeling it in the body). This feeling of space in the abdomen can be difficult to feel in an individual with any restriction in natural free breathing.
During deep prolonged inhalation, a pressure is created stimulating several effects of the sympathetic nervous system the most notable of which are temporary increases in heart rate and blood pressure (which will help them understand some contraindications). Deep prolonged exhalation tends to activate the parasympathetic (which again has many effects) including a drop in both heart rate and blood pressure.
Students will be guided through a lecture on the koshas, (including a 6 body version), kleshas, chakras, nadis and the prana vayus. They will use both their Essential Kundalini Text as well as their Enlightened Bodies Text to see these systems broken down in visuals. The lecture will build on how this Eastern view of the human body helps you to understand the many layered ways that yoga is beneficial to not only the gross anatomy but also the subtle anatomy and structure. Students will be given a "vocabulary list" to assist with spelling and pronunciation.
