This course is a three-week intensive YTT into Sanatan Yoga a classical Hatha, Jnana, and Raja yoga-based tradition, which has a strong foundation in the Gitananda Paramparai. There will be a short foundation course that you may need to complete before starting this course as a preparation depending upon your own experience. The course will be lead by Yogachariya Jnandev Giri and Yogacharini Deepika Giri who are both senior Gitananda Yoga teachers. For this course, Deepika will start of the training off, then Jnandev will join teaching the group for the two remaining weeks.

There are three wood cabins available these contain a single bed, set of draws and some clothes hanging space and a gas heater and solar lighting. There are two caravans available both have double sleeping space, a toilet compartment where a compost portable toilet can be if wanted and solar lighting. There are also two bell tents available these will contain a blow-up camping mattress or a bed. Yoga Satsanga Ashram also allow three camping places on the course to bring your own camping gear to keep the cost down.

Deepika and Jnandev have been successfully running YTT programs over the last 10 years at Yoga Satsanga Ashram which they founded in West Wales UK. The Ashram is Portugal is a new venture and expansion of the UK Ashram. As this will be the second program to be run at the Portugal Ashram, they are offering very low prices compared to the UK. This is partly due to the accommodation being very basic in Portugal and they understand this type of eco-living may not be manageable for everyone, even though it is the most yogic way of living!

Yoga philosophy structure

  • 1. Introduction and meaning of yoga in various context

Yoga has so many meanings, definitions as it all depends on what you are seeking out of yoga. It can be seen as tools to keep fit physically, others can see it as a tool to relax, stay calm, or can see it as tools to concentrate and meditate. In this chapter, you will explore various meanings and definitions of yoga in various contexts and scriptures.

  • 2. Yoga in ancient and modern times

Yoga has evolved, transformed. Yoga used to be for a few of those seeking enlightenment in Ancient India where the Guru will look for a disciple who is qualified to learn yoga. While in modern times yoga is easily available and accessible to everyone. Yoga has also devolved as in modern times many are using term yoga as a fashion and brand to teach all the keep fit exercises. In this section, you will explore how yoga has transformed from ancient to modern times.

  • 3. Raja yoga or Ashtanga yoga

Raja yoga or Ashtanga yoga is the highest form of yoga as a path with tools to deal with your physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and karmic issues and various states as you grow and evolve. In this chapter, you will aim to understand the steps of Raja yoga as a life path.

Prana is the subtlest form of cosmic energy, which is all-pervading and all-sustaining. The whole universe evolves from this pranic energy. This energy evolves in various forms to sustain various activities in and around us. In this chapter, you will explore the concept of Pancha prana and the importance of its understanding in day to day life.

  • 11. Pranayama

The science of the vital energy or force that gives you life and vitality. Pranayamas are practiced through breathwork, but the breath-work is not the aim, it is to control your prana.

  • 12. Yoga as holistic Life

Health and happiness through yogic living - In this closing chapter, you will aim to study and understand the importance and value of yoga as holistic living and explore how yoga can be applied in day to day events. By accepting yoga as a lifestyle choice, you can be to see how naturally a healthy and happy life will come about. This chapter will also cover re-birth and re-incarnation to explore the concept of life as an eternal Divine blessing, to be free from fear of death and letting go.

13. Samaskaras, Karma, and evolution

Samaskaras are deeply ingrained behavior patterns. Karma is your action on the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual levels. In this chapter, you will try to explore and understand concepts of Karma and choices you make leading you into many unconscious karmas and Samskaras.

  • 14. Pratyahara, meaning, and importance

Pratyahara is the fifth limb of Raja yoga, which means sensory withdrawal. In this chapter, you will study about senses in modern and ancient concepts of yoga and Upanishads and explore the ways to discipline them.

  • 15. Tantra and Hatha concepts of union and evolution

Ha-Tha, Loma-viloma or masculine-feminine concepts yoga and exploring ways of their union in aid to evolution. You will study concepts of Tantra as energy balancing concepts of right and left (male and female) energies in you as individuals to become who you are.

  • 16. Dharana or concentration

Patanjali says that concentration is the ability of your mind. In this chapter, you will study the sixth limb of Ashtanga yoga and explore various tools and practices.

  • 17. Contemplation and cultivating your thoughts or learn how to think

The mind manifests or echoes through your body and vice versa. In this chapter, you will explore the importance and process of thinking, contemplation, and influences.

  • 18. Dhayana and Samadhi

These are the seventh and eight limbs of Raja yoga means meditation and enlightenment. In this chapter, you will continue from concentration or dharana and explore further deeper.

Solar rhythm and easy but rhythmic breathing are a nice and gentle way to introduce into pranayama practices. These are to help balance and activate our energies and harmonize your body, mind, and emotions together.

Note

Yoga Satsanga Ashram will run an intensive program over the four weeks early starts and teaching till late evenings. They will give a few hours off every afternoon and one day off per week, please refer to the complete schedule below.

Included excursions

Yoga Satsanga Ashram will give a day or half day off every week to allow you to explore the local area and take a break from the routine. Buses run into town from the nearest village which is approximately a 10-minute walk.

Location

The international Yoga Satsanga Ashram is set at the edge of a forest, mountain region very close to the City of Castelo Branco which is towards the Spanish border. They are approximately two hours from Lisbon airport by car. Buses are available every two hours from Lisbon for around 14 EUR (one way) to Castelo Branco where Yoga Satsanga Ashram can arrange pick up.

The ashram is a 21-acre hillside with many cork oaks trees and pine trees. The land is bordered by a seasonal stream and to the south side of the land, there are around 30 olive trees some of which are very old. There are some stunning panoramic views from the top of the land and some nice open spaces. Life at the ashram will be very much an outdoor lifestyle!

Yoga Satsanga Ashram will try to grow their own food, live in harmony with nature, use compost toilets, outdoor showers, and they are off-grid and have power via solar panels or a generator when they need to pump water from the borehole. There is one main building with a large yoga hall. Students will stay in a log cabin which may be shared with one other student.

There are also two caravans as single accommodation and camping option is also available. There will be different pricing for each option depending on the accommodation choice. This is a huge discount on the same course in our UK Ashram costs 3000 GBP currently.

Food

During this training, you will be served daily breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Vegan and vegetarian food only at the ashram. Yoga Satsanga Ashram their best to cater for any special dietary requirements within reason, specialist products may need to be purchased by the student. They also try to grow their own food!

Arrival by airplane

Please book your flight to arrive at Lisbon Portela Airport (LIS). There are buses from Lisbon central bus station to Castelo Branco, several a day, the cost is around 14 EUR. Once you get to Castelo Branco, Yoga Satsanga Ashram can collect you from there.
