For this teacher training, you will be offered with 22 nights accommodation in Villa Meli and surrounding apartments in Lefkada island. Villa Meli is a spacious (250 square meters) traditional mansion, one of the vacation rental homes that really makes a difference as it is made exclusively from old local stone and wood.

Given the respect to the local traditional architecture, the attention to detail is evident in all the superbly-decorated interiors which combine rustic authenticity with all-modern amenities. Exposed beams, high ceilings, wooden floors, antiques, and unique wrought-iron beds give the mansion the character and feel of a genuinely refined and elegant country house. A large courtyard with an old walnut tree and a traditional wood burning oven, create exquisite sitting and dining areas with spectacular views of the surrounding countryside.

The beautiful apartments around the villa, where the rest of the students will stay are also traditional, built from local wood and stone and will provide a quiet and relaxed atmosphere to rest after the training program.

The primary aim of this yoga teacher certification course is to make a new generation of yoga instructors with profound knowledge of Vinyasa Flow yoga and the yogi way of living through a deeper understanding of their own practice and their own body.

The yoga courses are based on the theoretical background on anatomy, physiology, pranayama, philosophy, and ethics of yoga presented in an interactive way applying the knowledge on the daily asanas practice and the peer-to-peer observation and adjustment.

Course objective

This yoga teacher training course is focused on Vinyasa flow. The system of Ashtanga also through the asanas of Primary Series inspired by Sri Pattabhi Jois the guru-student of Krishnamacharya is a combination of asanas (yoga postures), dynamic movement (Vinyasa), coupled with breath control (pranayama).

It can be the base for countless yoga sequences since the foundation and alignment of each posture will be deeply analyzed. The breath, drishti (gaze), and bandhas (energy locks) are primary ingredients of this method. In addition to that and by completing this training course, you will be able to create your own flows (sequences) using the elements of Ashtanga and parts of your individual personalities.

Key alignments, modifications, contraindications, and use of basic yoga props as well as hands-on adjustment techniques, teaching methodology, and teaching practice are all in the daily program of this course.

Through the theoretical knowledge of Anatomy and the teaching technics, you will manage to address to a wide variety of students and even create tailor-made classes for clients with special needs and demands. YogaUnion place a lot of emphasis on learning Sanskrit names of postures to both expand your knowledge and enhance your professionalism as a teacher.

Furthermore, the course includes pranayama (breathing technics) and meditation sessions which will give the chance to you to incorporate them into your own classes and take your practice to a deeper and more profound level. Other styles of yoga, such as Yin yoga, Restorative yoga, and Hatha yoga will be part of the daily lessons.

Ashtanga yoga

Learn the history and relevance of Ashtanga yoga to the modern world. The elements of Ashtanga yoga comprises of Vinyasa (breath-synchronized motion), Ujjayi pranayama (victorious breathing), bandhas (inner locks), and dristis (gaze points). The primary series composed of sun salutations, standing series, seated series, and finishing sequence. This includes jump back and jumps through as well as drop backs.

Vinyasa flow

Learn Vinyasa flow yoga and the principles of sequencing and teaching a Vinyasa flow class using various asanas except for the ones of Ashtanga.

Yin and Restorative yoga

Yin yoga is based on the idea of stretching and deepening into a pose with the help of the body’s gravity and the gradual immersion through time. Restorative on the other hand as its name reveals heals and restores the muscles with the use of various props. You will experience the relaxing and healing properties of both systems and of course, will have the chance to analyze them and incorporate them to your teachings.

Yoga course content

Practice technics

Analysis of the 80 postures of Ashtanga primary series and of more advanced postures including arm balances, backbends, and inversions. Modifications, other variations, and advance variation of all postures. You will also learn how to use yoga props like block, bolster, strap, blanket the wall in your yoga practice as well as rope headstand.

Observation and feedback on your personal practice will be given by teachers every day immediately after the asana class. Daily hands-on adjustments are given to students by expert teachers to deepen your physical practice. The teachers are always present in your practice observing and suggesting you the necessary corrections, variations, or improvements.

Once a week there will also be posture clinic lessons to make sure that you practice with correct technics and alignment so that when you leave the course you have advanced your practice to a much higher level than you came with and apply the theoretical knowledge in your own practice.

Workshops

The themed workshops will cover a wide range of asana keys like handstands, backbends, inversions, and hip openers. Twice per week, the trainees will meet one of these aspects through more advanced asanas and demanding postures as well as the way of working towards them.

Teaching practice

Includes practice teaching, receiving feedback, observing others teaching, hearing, and giving feedback. Also, includes assisting students while someone else is teaching.

Pranayama (yogic breathing)

According to the great yogis, breath equals to energy flow so through these morning classes you will get hands-on experience of how the breath works. You will learn the introduction, pranayama aspects, pranic body, different types of prana, types of breathing, anatomy of breathing, and yogic breathing.

Various breath technics will be tested such as:

  • Nadi Shodhana (alternate nostril breathing)

  • Shitkari (hissing breath)
  • Bhramari (humming bee breath)

Ourania Bouzouki
Ourania, once a successful architect working in Florence, decided to follow her passion and devote herself to yoga. She started practicing Ashtanga yoga with Giovanni Formisano in 1996 and she completed her first 4-year teacher training in Hatha yoga in 1999 and since then has accumulated countless hours following inspiring teachers in seminars, teacher training courses and workshops all over the world, including India where she still visits every year. Since 2010 she is running with success a teacher training studio, helping to spread the love for yoga to students all over the world

Location

This yoga teacher training will take place in the Southwestern part of the amazing island of Lefkada, Greece, in the village called Dragano.

The scenery in the southwest of Lefkada is mountainous and wild, with rich greenery, unspoiled by tourism, yet, it is one of the areas that are visited by every single visitor in the island due to its famous beaches.Breathtaking Porto Katsiki, exotic Egremni, impressive Gialos, are all must-visit beaches for the Sundays when students will have their day off from training.

The village, Dragano, is a very quiet one, hence no noise from cars or nightlife, only nature sounds, birds, chickens and occasionally donkeys. It is a traditional village with stone-made houses built on the top of a hill surrounded by amazing nature. The trees and the flowers combined with the breathtaking view to the infinite blue of the sea and the small islands of Skorpios and Meganisi turn this place into a real paradise.

There is only one taverna with delicious home-made cuisine within walking distance while the closest shops are within 1.5 kilometers at the next village. However, cars with supplies such as bakery products, groceries or fish, stop by the main square on a daily basis. Inhabitants are mainly producers of honey but they also produce oil and wine.

Food

The food during the program will be a complete responsibility of the team of Food Path. All meals will be based on the principles of vegetarianism, Ayurveda, and macrobiotics. Local fresh ingredients and tasty combinations full of energy will drive you to a tasty journey of all the senses.

Lefkada, Greece is really famous for the summer water sports. Windsurfing, water skiing, paragliding, kite, and much more are offered daily in its lush nature and crystal blue waters. Keep in mind that Sundays are free days in the training program, you may have the opportunity to try them out. Furthermore, by renting a car you can take a tour of the island's numerous beaches or go on a cruise to the nearby smaller islands.
