Accommodation is provided at the venue and is included in the booking fee. You will stay in a lovely cottage style property with gardens and stunning views over the valley to the Tejada mountain range views. It is only a five minute walk from the whitewashed village of Iznate where shops, pharmacy, and cafes are available.

Program

At Spirit of Yoga, you will be offered a quality in-depth training in classical yoga. The course content has a therapeutic and yoga healing emphasis and will qualify yoga teachers to teach all general classes.

This 200-hour intensive training aims to give students a solid foundation in yoga teaching. Students will receive their certificate after successful completion of the program and will be qualified to teach yoga classes to a variety of clients.

Students will learn how to plan a yoga class for different clients, study the asanas in detail, learn about the philosophy behind yoga, and study various techniques of relaxation, meditation, etc.

The course is designed to provide students with:

  • The knowledge that will enable you to teach level 1 asana classes confidently and competently
  • Awareness of safe practice for both teacher and student through modification and sequencing of asanas to suit an individual’s body
  • Self-confidence and belief in your ability to communicate and demonstrate
  • Step-by-step guidance in designing a six-week beginner’s course that you can immediately apply in your teaching
  • A thorough grounding in the history and philosophy of yoga
  • Insightful awareness of your own practice: both an acceptance of its limits and the tools to evolve
  • An experiential foundation of yoga philosophy and how to integrate this into your life
  • Thorough knowledge of anatomy and physiology and its application in the practice of asana
  • Practical advice on how to set up your own yoga business from people who already have
  • An awareness of the issues that can arise for you as a teacher
  • A professional and ethical framework from which to practice

Teaching methods

Teaching methods include: lectures, experiential classes, small and large group work, practice teaching time, exercises for learning and discovery, lectures and review of homework.

Asana sessions are taught by Maggie, occasionally assisted by other qualified teachers.

Course content

The course content covers the following general areas:

  • Evolution of your own practice and focus on understanding of what’s happening in your body and mind as your foundation to teach
  • De-construction and analysis of key poses, their core alignment points and how to teach them
  • Common postural problems, modifications, safe practice, and preventing injury
  • How to make sensitive adjustments
  • Essential pranayama, breath awareness, and Restorative yoga
  • Practical anatomy and physiology, including conditions you may encounter when you teach different approaches to meditation, personal and experiential teaching practice
  • The history of yoga
  • Study of key texts including the yoga sutras of Patanjali and the Bhagavad Gita
  • Teaching skills including class planning and sequencing
  • Common issues arising out of a teaching practice such as covering classes, teaching one to one and groups
  • Essentials of setting up your own yoga business
  • Chanting
  • Ethical practice

Pre-requisites

This 200-hour level training is open to students of all ages and abilities. You must have an established personal practice. Maggie will speak with each student individually to access his or her suitability for the training program.

Please note that this course is certified with the Yoga Alliance International and Maggie is a registered senior teacher with the Yoga Alliance Professionals and UK.

Schedule

The course will run daily with morning class starting from 9:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. and afternoon class from 4:15 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Maggie (Manorama) teaches yoga in Spain and India. She is the founder and director of Spirit of Yoga Classical Yoga Institute in Malaga, Spain. Maggie has a wealth of knowledge about India and its traditions and offers educational and spiritual retreats and pilgrimages to the lesser known holy places.

Location

The course will take place at Spirit of Yoga Ashram. It is set in the beautiful rolling hills of Andalusia, with stunning views of the Maroma mountain range, close to the scenic village of Iznate in Malaga, Spain.

Things to do (optional)

This course will give you the opportunity where you can really experience the Spanish lifestyle, walk in the hills, visit the whitewashed Andalusian mountain villages, or explore places of historical interest during your leisure time. You can head down to the coast and lie on of the beautiful beaches near Nerja!

A few excursions can be arranged at extra cost, such as to the local Buddhist Stupa, or an evening meditation on the beach followed by dinner in the beachside cafe, or a visit to the hot springs at Alhama de Granada.
