Do you want to join a community of over 300 Zenways yoga teachers who are sharing these benefits with others across the world? Do you want to find and learn to express your authentic yoga passion? Do you want to find your Zen way of becoming a yoga teacher? Do you want to embark on the path of teaching yoga that is truly an endless journey of discovery in yourself and your students? Are you looking for a yoga training path that is rooted in the Buddhist tradition, and includes the practice of Zen yoga?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, then Zenways yoga teacher training is for you. Thiscourse that is designed around you and your path as an individual since we believe becoming a yoga teacher is about your journey, understanding, and inner confidence.
Zenways is a UK-based organisation that promotes and encourages activities and practices that enhance human wellbeing, balance and awakening in the modern world. The unique Zenways 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training course is accredited by the Yoga Alliance and has been running for 15+ years.
During the course, you will stay at Whaley Hall in a single room with a shared bathroom. The center accommodates up to 40 people in recently renovated bedrooms with ample bathroom facilities, and features a conservatory situated on the first floor, overlooking the Goyt Valley with a panoramic view of the National Park and beyond.
Our yoga teacher training course will give you the knowledge and confidence to teach yoga professionally in a range of paces and styles, through clear demonstration, appropriate use of voice, correct alignment, awareness of the energetic dimension, sensitive adjustments and kindness.
We put a big emphasis on acquiring practical teaching skills that will be of use in the class setting. In addition you will learn many aspects to explore and develop in your own practice because we believe that the key to a fulfilling and successful yoga career is your own vibrant and sustaining practice.
Our course content includes a broad range of history, philosophy, asana practice, and teaching theory and practice. Everything is oriented around teaching and getting you to be your best teacher.
Most yoga schools are based in Hindu or Vedic philosophy – our training covers these teachings, but is uniquely based in the Yogacara (literally “yoga practice”) philosophy of Mahayana Buddhism, which is one of the cornerstones of Zen. Yogacara emphasises the exploration of our true nature through meditative and yogic practices, and describes a detailed Buddhist psychological view of the mind and our senses.
However, you don't need to be Buddhist, want to be Buddhist, or have ever studied Buddhism to come on our course. Our primary goal is to offer you a variety of approaches and philosophies and encourage you to find your own passion, and then learn how to teach from there.
Fundamentally, Zen is about uncovering your authentic, true self. So, rather than using a cookie-cutter “teaching formula”, the training centers on helping you find your truth and empowering you to express that through your teaching since they know every teacher is individual and unique.
Rather than just teaching you “our” way and “our” sequences, scripts, and postures, we orient ourselves around your path as an individual. You will leave the training with a complete foundation and toolkit, ready to take your teaching out into your community. We focus on giving you the principles and techniques to equip you for a lifetime of exploring, developing, evolving, and refining how to teach your yoga passion.
You will learn:
This is a two-week, total-immersion course. You will experience a deep, transformational journey through this retreat-style format. Recent studies have shown that, for many people, an intensive training period is the most efficient way to learn. You will be completely immersed in learning, practicing, and teaching yoga every day for two weeks, surrounded by others on the same path and in a beautiful and nurturing location.
Plus the teacher will be right there for you. During this time, not only will you acquire the skills for your future career, but you will probably find you are going through a supercharged personal growth process.
You will need at least two years of regular yoga class experience (or equivalent) before doing your yoga teacher training. “Equivalent” may include other movement forms or other practices that are based on a similar philosophy.

Julian Daizan Skinner is the first Englishman to go to Japan and become a Roshi or Zen Master in the rigorous Rinzai tradition of Zen. About twenty years ago, he gave up a promising career as a scientist in the pharmaceuticals industry, sold his house, gave all the money away and entered a Zen monastery. He has studied yoga with many teachers, including traveling to India to study with 90-year-old Sri Pattabhi Jois. He has synthesized the most useful elements of what he learned, both within and outside Zen monasteries, into Zenways yoga.
