Anatomy and physiology of Pre and Postnatal yoga

In this module, a comprehensive understanding of the structural and functional changes that occur during pregnancy is gained. This includes changes in the musculoskeletal system, hormonal fluctuations, and alterations in the cardiovascular, respiratory, and digestive systems. This knowledge forms the foundation for creating safe and effective sequences of prenatal yoga asanas.

Recognizing common pregnancy discomforts

Common pregnancy-related discomforts such as nausea, heartburn, backache, and fatigue are identified. Additionally, contraindications for physical activities that should be avoided during prenatal yoga practice are explored. Understanding these discomforts and contraindications is vital for tailoring customized yoga practices that cater to the specific needs of pregnant women.

Understanding the stages of labor and delivery

This module of prenatal and postnatal yoga teacher training at Rishikul Yogshala delves into the different stages of labor and delivery, including the phases of contractions and the physiological changes occurring in both the mother and baby’s bodies during each stage. This knowledge empowers the preparation of pregnant women to cope with the physical and emotional challenges of labor and delivery.

Prenatal and postnatal yoga asanas

A deep understanding is acquired of how to modify and adapt traditional yoga asanas to make them safe and beneficial for pregnant women. This includes poses that can alleviate pregnancy-related discomforts, promote relaxation, and prepare the body for childbirth.

Using props for Pre and Postnatal yoga practice

The effective use of props such as bolsters, blankets, and blocks is explored to provide additional support and enhance the accessibility of yoga poses for pregnant women.

Creating effective sequences

This section focuses on the art of sequencing a prenatal yoga class. Sequences are crafted considering the different trimesters of pregnancy and accommodating the varying physical abilities and limitations of pregnant students.

Meditation techniques for relaxation

Insights into various breathwork and meditation techniques specifically designed to help pregnant women relax, reduce stress, and prepare for childbirth are gained. Techniques such as Ujjayi breathing, Bhramari breath, and meditation are explored to calm the nervous system and create an optimal environment for the baby’s growth and development.

Teaching methodology

Best practices for teaching prenatal and postnatal yoga classes safely and effectively are learned, taking into account the unique physical abilities and limitations of pregnant participants.

Modifications and adjustments

This module covers techniques for modifying and adjusting yoga poses based on the individual needs of pregnant women, ensuring a safe and comfortable practice.

Sequencing prenatal yoga classes

An understanding is developed on how to structure and sequence prenatal yoga classes, considering the different trimesters of pregnancy and adapting the practice to accommodate the physical capabilities and limitations of pregnant students.

Dress code

Yogakulam Academy strongly recommends wearing loose, breathable cotton clothing, allowing the skin—and especially the navel area—to breathe freely and remain comfortable throughout the extensive practice sessions.

For these reasons, wearing leggings is discouraged, as they are often made from synthetic fabrics treated with PFAS ("forever chemicals")—known to cause hormone disruption, thyroid dysfunction, and even certain cancers—and BPA, another endocrine-disrupting chemical linked to long-term health risks.

Included excursions

There are activities you can enjoy:

  • Backwaters floating meditation
  • Lake visit
  • Small hike
  • Yoga near the lake
  • Opening and closing ceremony
