There are approximately 14,000 people living in Koh Phangan, the majority of which are of Chinese descent. There are also many Thais from all over Thailand, who moved there to start a tourism-related business. Most inhabitants live in Thong Sala, the main gateway into the island from Samui.

Once in Thailand, you have a number of options depending on your preference, time, and budget. More than likely, your trip will be comprised of more than one option below.

The most direct way to Koh Phangan is to fly from Bangkok or Phuket to Samui Airport (USM). From there, you can purchase a joint ticket that includes a shuttle from the airport to the pier and the ferry to Koh Phangan.

Another option is to fly from Bangkok to Surat Thani Airport (URT) and take the ferry to Koh Phangan. You can buy your joint ticket at the Surat Thani Airport (URT). There are two ferry options: fast speedboat ferry or slow ferry. From Surat Thani Airport to Koh Phangan, the fast ferry takes approximately 3 hours 15 minutes while the slow ferry takes 5 hours 15 minutes.

Once you make it to Koh Phangan, there will be taxis waiting for you at the pier. Tell a driver that you want to go to “Ananda” on Hin Kong Beach, and they’ll know where to take you. Fare will range from 200 THB in low season to possibly 400 THB in high season.

Arrival by ferry / boat

From Koh Samui pier to Koh Phangan, the speedboat journey takes approximately 30 minutes and the slow ferry journey takes 1 hour 30 minutes.
