What is Yin yoga?
Yin yoga is rooted in the ancient Taoist concept of Yin and Yang - the complementary duality of stillness and movement. Unlike dynamic (Yang) styles of yoga, Yin focuses on long-held passive poses that target the deep connective tissues - fascia, ligaments, joints, and tendons.
Yin yoga is a very slow form of yoga that involves many pauses and that works with the contractive tendons of the body, joints, bones, and fascia. In English, it is usually translated as a ‘gentler’ type of yoga, compared to ‘active’ or ‘muscular’ types such as Ashtanga or Vinyasa.
In Yin yoga, postures are primarily floor-based and held for two to five minutes, allowing for deep energetic and physical release. Combined with pranayama (breathwork), meditation, and a strong focus on internal awareness, Yin yoga facilitates profound stillness, introspection, and emotional healing.
At Lalitha Yoga Academy, they preserve the authentic teachings of Yin while guiding students to explore their unique expression as a teacher.

Features of Yin YTT in Varkala, India
1. Long-held poses
Postures are held for an extended period, typically between two to five minutes (or even longer). The extended holds allow the body to release tension in the deeper tissues gradually.
2. Targets connective tissues
Yin yoga works on areas of the body that are less elastic, such as the fascia, ligaments, and joints. Holding poses with minimal muscular effort will allow these tissues to gently stretch and strengthen.
3. Focus on stillness
Yin yoga encourages stillness in both the body and the mind, promoting a meditative experience. It often integrates mindfulness and deep breathing to foster relaxation and mental clarity.
4. Calming and meditative
Yin yoga is designed to balance the Yang energy (active, dynamic movement) with stillness and introspection. It enhances emotional release, reduces stress, and improves focus.
5. Suitable for all levels
Yin yoga is accessible to beginners and advanced practitioners alike. It emphasizes finding your edge - a balance between comfort and challenge - rather than pushing too hard.
Benefits of Yin yoga
- Improves flexibility and joint mobility
- Releases stress and promotes deep relaxation
- Encourages mindfulness and enhances self-awareness
- Supports the flow of chi (energy) in the body's meridians, which aligns with Traditional Chinese Medicine principles
