Soma Yoga Institute's curriculum includes a unique blend of alignment-based Vinyasa flow, a solid foundation in Hatha yoga, and 200 hours of instruction offered within a therapeutic framework. The program is totally flexible and designed so you can work at your own pace in a way that is harmonious with a yogic lifestyle rather than rushing to meet deadlines that are not meaningful to you. Complete at your own pace: 8 weeks, 12 weeks, 16 weeks, or 1 year. Get certified through Yoga Alliance as an RYT-200 upon course completion.
Students who complete their training before December 31, 2021, are eligible to register with Yoga Alliance as Registered Yoga Teachers (RYT®).
There are 6 weeks of group calls offered live on Zoom. Choose the time that works for your schedule: Tuesdays 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. (PST, UTC -7, 5:30pm London) , Wednesdays 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. (PST, UTC -7, 6:00pm New York), Wednesdays 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. (PST, UTC -7), Saturdays 8:00 a.m. -11:00 p.m. (PST, UTC -7, 5;00pm Paris). If you would like to join but the times don't work, just send Soma Yoga Institute a message and they will work something out with you.
The majority of the course material and lessons are pre-recorded and kept in a state of the art, easy to use platform. Students are required to attend 12 hours of live calls typically once a week for six weeks. Students will also meet with their faculty mentor one-to-one 5 times throughout the program.
You and your mentor will schedule times together to meet via Zoom or telephone so that the meeting works well in both of your schedules.
Yes, definitely. Skeptical? Soma Yoga Institute was too. However, the Soma Yoga Institute teaching team has been leading teacher trainings for over a decade. The curriculum is well-developed, time tested, and established. They have taken their live program online as the content is of incredibly high value and will bring great benefit to those who wish to deepen their own practice, and/or teach others as well as those who already teach who wish to refine and enhance their offerings to better serve their students.
The institute's anatomy informed adaptive approach is not easily found in other programs. Their teaching skill section is designed that if you practice, and practice, and practice some more, it is certain that you will be ready, confident, and equally skilled as a new teacher as those who take the in-person trainings.
To receive authorization with Yoga Alliance as RYT-200, quizzes and exams are a required part of your curriculum. You will find quizzes sprinkled throughout after the videos to empower your learning. Quiz retakes are allowed if the first time through you do not receive a passing grade. Also expect a “take home” final exam as well as final teaching practicum via zoom. We are here to support your success. Please do not let the Yoga Alliance policy of "grading" stand in your way. We will prep you well (our promise to you), and you will all do just fine (trust in yourself).
Everyone has different needs, Soma Yoga Institute suggests following along with one of their established curricula plans to keep you on track. These are 8 weeks (approximately 25 hours per week of study and practice), 12 weeks (approximately 16 hours of study and practice per week), 16 weeks (approximately 12. 5 hours of study and practice per week), 6 months (approximately 8 hours per week of study and practice), and 12 months (approximately 4 hours per week of study and practice).
If flexibility is what you are looking for, Soma Yoga Institute will give you up to 12 months to complete your program. Upon enrollment with your mentor, you will together determine the best study plan for you so that you can keep your pace and be motivated to the finish line.
Students are encouraged to attend six 120-minute live calls via Zoom. The rest of the prerecorded content can be completed at your own pace. Each student will receive a faculty mentor and will meet with your mentor five times throughout the program.

Liz Heffernan, E-RYT 500, C-IAYT is an international yoga teacher and Integrative Yoga Therapist. She draws from over two decades of personal yoga practice, 22 years of teaching and extensive training in the Hatha yoga systems of Kripalu, Ashtanga, and Anusara. She currently directs and leads Yoga teacher trainings and workshops worldwide, provides unique one-to-one mentoring for yoga teachers, instructs daily yoga classes and offers private therapeutic sessions. Additionally, Liz serves as a mentor/faculty for the Kripalu School of Integrative Yoga Therapy Professional Yoga Therapy program.
Innately perceptive beyond her years and wildly passionate about everything in her path, Molly applies a level of determination and delight that is truly one of a kind. Her unique teaching style is both intense and focused but lightened with creativity, compassion, and humor. She believes that this balance of effort and surrender is the key to unlocking the awareness of one's true nature. A student of yoga since the age of 16, Molly has studied intensely with Chuck Miller and completed teacher training with Annie Carpenter and Don Stapelton.
Peggy Profant, E-RYT 500, and certified Anusara yoga teacher is on a lifelong path of yoga and taking its insightful teachings into all areas of her life. She first discovered the practice in 1980 and began teaching it to others in 1997. Ashtanga, Iyengar, and Anusara are the schools in which have influenced her practice. As one who lives courageously from her heart, she passionately teaches her classes with meaningful yogic themes while keeping a keen attention to alignment. In addition to yoga, being in nature and with her family is where she finds her deepest joy and peace.
Samantha (Sam) Akers, E-RYT-500, C-IAYT, CMT, found yoga and massage when she was diagnosed with chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia in 1998. Her practice began with Restorative Yoga and Yoga Nidra and brought her such incredible healing, she knew this had to be shared with others. She studied the Therapeutic Style of Iyengar Yoga with Judith Lasater, Leeann Carey and Russ Pfeiffer. Sam's love of therapeutic yoga, inspired her to open TheraYoga Studio and develop the TheraYoga Method. She is also a massage therapist, specializing in combining mindfulness with bodywork.
This teacher training is held online through Kajabi Course Management software - all you need is internet access. Soma Yoga Institute is located in California, USA (UTC -8), and they will live-stream yoga training sessions via Zoom which you can participate from the comfort of your home. 90% of the curriculum is online but 12 hours of live calls are required.
