Curriculum
Mysore style Ashtanga yoga (theory and practical)
Mysore-style Ashtanga Yoga is a self-paced practice emphasizing independence under teacher guidance. Originating from Mysore, India, it integrates Ujjayi breathing, Bandhas, and Drishti. Practiced early mornings, it progresses through six series, incorporating Sun Salutations, standing, seated, backbends, and inversions, promoting physical strength, flexibility, focus, and meditative awareness.
Traditional Hatha yoga (theory and practical)
Traditional Hatha yoga harmonizes mind and body through asanas, pranayama, and meditation. Rooted in ancient texts, it emphasizes balance ("Ha"–sun, "Tha"–moon), slow-paced postures, and breath control. It prepares the body for meditation, activates energy channels, and includes cleansing techniques (Shatkarmas) for detoxification, promoting holistic well-being and inner peace.
Vinyasa Flow yoga (theory and practical)
Vinyasa Flow Yoga emphasizes smooth transitions between poses, synchronized with breath. Rooted in Ashtanga Yoga, it creates a dynamic, flowing sequence, enhancing strength, flexibility, and mindfulness. This practice incorporates creative sequences, pranayama, and meditation, fostering physical vitality and mental focus. Each session is unique, offering balance, fluidity, and meditative movement.
Yoga Nidra (yogic sleep)
Yoga Nidra, or "yogic sleep," is a guided relaxation technique inducing a state between sleep and wakefulness. Practitioners lie comfortably, following instructions to relax body and mind systematically. It calms the nervous system, reduces stress, improves focus, and fosters deep rest and self-awareness, promoting physical and mental rejuvenation.
Yoga gestures (mudras)
Mudras are symbolic hand gestures used in yoga to channel and balance energy flow. They enhance meditation, pranayama, and asana practices by influencing the body’s energy pathways. Examples include Gyan Mudra (for wisdom), Prana Mudra (for vitality), and Anjali Mudra (for reverence), promoting mental clarity, healing, and inner harmony.
Energy lock (Bandhas)
Bandhas are energy locks in yoga used to control and redirect prana (life force) within the body. There are three main bandhas: Mula Bandha (root lock), Uddiyana Bandha (abdominal lock), and Jalandhara Bandha (throat lock). Practicing bandhas enhances energy flow, stability, focus, and the effectiveness of pranayama and meditation.
Tradition and an ancient meditation (Dhyana)
Dhyana, an essential limb of Patanjali's Ashtanga yoga, represents meditative absorption. Rooted in ancient traditions, it involves focused, uninterrupted concentration on a single point, leading to self-awareness and inner stillness. Practicing Dhyana harmonizes mind and soul, transcends distractions, and prepares for Samadhi (ultimate liberation), fostering deep spiritual connection.
Trataka (Tantric meditation practice)
Trataka is a tantric meditation technique focused on gazing at a single object, often a candle flame, to enhance concentration and develop mental clarity. It activates the third eye chakra, calms the mind, and improves focus. Regular practice fosters deeper awareness, inner peace, and strengthens the mind's ability to meditate.
Mantra chanting (recitation of sacred sound)
Mantra chanting involves the repetitive recitation of sacred sounds or phrases to focus the mind and invoke spiritual vibrations. It aids in concentration, reduces mental distractions, and aligns the practitioner’s energy. Common mantras include "Om" and "So Hum," promoting inner peace, heightened awareness, and deeper meditation.
Yoga anatomy and physiology
Yoga anatomy and physiology study the body's structure and functions as they relate to yoga practice. It emphasizes understanding muscles, joints, nerves, and the respiratory system. Practicing yoga enhances physical health, improves flexibility, strengthens muscles, and harmonizes body systems, fostering overall well-being through mindful alignment and breath control.
Yoga alignments and adjustment
Yoga alignments ensure proper posture and body alignment during asanas, promoting safety and maximizing benefits. Proper alignment prevents injury and enhances flexibility and strength. Adjustments from instructors help correct misalignments, deepen postures, and encourage balance in the body. These adjustments refine technique and support individual practice and progress.
Shatkarma (various types of yogic cleansing exercises)
Shatkarma refers to six traditional yogic cleansing techniques aimed at purifying the body and mind. These include practices like Neti (nasal cleansing), Dhauti (digestive system cleansing), Basti (colon cleansing), and Trataka (gazing practice). Regular Shatkarma enhances health, detoxifies, boosts energy, and prepares the body for deeper meditation and yoga.
