Overview

Sthira sukhamāsanam - asana is a steady and comfortable posture - Patanjali, Sutra 2.46. As mentioned in the Yoga sutras asana is steady and comfortable, two Yin qualities. To be able to sit for a long period in deep, undisturbed meditation, the body needs to be open and strong. This opening especially in the hips and lower back can be developed through a dedicated Yin practice.

Yin yoga targets the deep connective tissues of the body (vs. the superficial tissues) and the fascia that cover the body; this Daoist yoga helps to regulate the flow of energy in the body. The Yin energy is ruled by the moon and enhances coolness and calmness in body and mind. The stillness of the body experienced in this yoga practice creates the stillness of the mind and ultimately helps you to realize your true nature.

The way you know and practice Yin yoga was developed by Paul Grilley in the late 80s. It is based on Daoist yoga that combines the ancient Indian traditions with the Chinese energy system (meridians), his knowledge of anatomy, and the meridian theory. It is a great complementary practice to all the Yang yoga styles and is highly recommended for those of you who practice Ashtanga Vinyasa or Vinyasa yoga to balance your Yin and Yang energies.

Yin yoga asanas

During the course, you will practice and teach 26 Yin asanas, like a caterpillar, swan, and frog with variations and modifications. With the help of different props, you can get a deeper feeling and understanding of the postures.

Asana alignment

In the asana alignment classes, you will break down every pose and you will learn verbal and hands-on adjustment. You all have different bodies and enter poses in different ways. Therefore, the use of props like blocks, bolsters, cushions, and blankets is one key element of a safe and effective Yin yoga practice.

Yin yoga fundamentals

In these lectures, you will learn how Yin yoga was developed, the theory of exercise behind it, how and when to practice Yin yoga, the concept of playing with your edges, and much more.

Yogic anatomy

From a yogic point of view, you are much more than your physical body. Your different layers encompass all aspects of being, starting from the physical body, via the pranic, mental, and intellectual body to the bliss body. When the five sheats are balanced and atman and brahman are one, a state of well-being arises. In the yogic anatomy module, they introduce you to:

  • Nadis
  • Pancha prana
  • Pancha kosha
  • Sariras

Meridians

A network of energy channels called meridians in Traditional Chinese Medicine moves energy through your body. In this module, they introduce you to the meridian system and how certain poses can improve the function of different organs in your body.

  • Lungs
  • Large intestine
  • Stomach
  • Spleen
  • Heart
  • Small intestine
  • Urinary bladder
  • Kidney
  • Gall bladder
  • Liver

Anatomy and physiology

To offer a safe Yin yoga practice that promotes health and supports healing processes, it is important to understand the anatomical foundations of Yin yoga and how it affects your physical body. In this Yin yoga course, you will cover:

  • Nervous system
  • Spine anatomy
  • Hip anatomy
  • Yin tissues

Teaching methodology

Your teaching methodology sessions will help you understand:

  • How to give the right instructions
  • The right tone of voice
  • How to give a proper alignment of the postures
  • How to modify the pose
  • Where and how to use props to do modification and to prevent injuries
  • How to prepare Yin classes
  • The art of sequencing and teaching
  • How to be mindful while teaching
