What is therapeutic yoga?

In this 300-hour course, you will learn how to use yoga techniques to prevent various illnesses and also facilitate healing. Yoga is in itself a transformative and therapeutic journey. However, yoga and therapy yoga does have subtle differences.

People look for therapy yoga classes when they suffer from injury, some ailment, or are recovering from an illness. The yoga techniques that you will learn as a part of the course will help you to specialize in making the body feel better. It is more about supporting the functionality and utilizing healing for the body. You will learn the techniques for yourself and others in great detail.

The course contents will take you through the foundations of the yoga philosophy, basic yoga anatomy and body processes, pathology of common diseases, and yoga techniques to address specific body issues.

Studying yoga for therapeutic benefits has assumed a lot of importance lately, owing to the rise in diseases in the population owing to lifestyle choices. The doctors also stress the yogic curative and preventative methods, apart from recuperative benefits.

You will study the most common subjects like asanas, pranayama, meditation, mudras, kriyas, bandhas, mantras, and chanting, to name a few. Therapeutic yoga course educated professional are in great demand in various hospital settings and health management settings.

Pranayama

You will get enormous benefits from the course as it addresses specific body issues, if that is what you are looking to attend. In Therapy yoga, breath retention or Kumbhaka is not practiced as it may affect the patient or practitioner in an adverse manner.

Natural breathing is strongly encouraged as a part of this practice. No matter why you are pursuing the course, for yourself or others, you ought to understand the importance of breathing and its patterns. You can also utilize basic abdominal breathing, thoracic breathing, yogic breathing, deep breathing, and many other techniques. However, Kumbhaka is to be avoided entirely. The course helps in the regulation of Prana within the body.

Asana

As a part of the yoga therapy training from Shree Hari Yoga School, you will learn the importance and therapeutic benefits of yoga. In asanas, there are three aspects, the movement, stability, and release.

The first and third steps are linked to the second and facilitates healing from the core. There is also no stress or tension in the first and third position. However, when you are holding the asana, you are applying stress or tension on certain body parts. The asanas create pressure on the muscles, joints, and the glands.

You will practice asanas that can help the efficiency of the body. The best teachers will guide you through the process. Some of the asanas that you will practice as a part of the course are chair-based sun salutations, chair yoga asanas, calf stretches, chest lifts, and pelvic lifts to name a few.

Mantra

Mantras have been a part of yoga since time immemorial. They can elevate your experience to another level altogether. You repeat syllables, words, or phrases to raise vibrations and manifest certain outcomes.

Some of the most common mantras that you will practice as a part of the course are kirtan mantras, devotional mantras, and peace mantras. Through the right mantras, you can tap into the resources within the body that can heal fast. This is what Yoga Chikitsa is all about. Nerves are the fastest route to healing, and so are very important in this realm.

Art of teaching

The therapeutic yoga is very gentle in approach. Moreover, there are similarities with medical yoga. You will also use technology to support your practices. Furthermore, you need not rush through the yoga classes.

You have to feel the body, breath, heart, and mind of the people you will be practicing with or teaching. You do not deal with alignment corrections in this form of yoga. In this context, you will learn both eastern as well as western concepts as a part of the course.

You will also learn to use therapeutic yoga for diseases like back pain, cancer, arthritis, and asthma. You have to learn to deviate from the normal to benefit the students or patients whom you will teach, respectively.

In this realm, the asanas for stretching, breathing exercises, and relaxation play a huge role. Regular attendance is considered important in the learning process. Lectures also play an important part and so does the practical classes.

Anatomy and physiology

You will learn functional as well as experiential anatomy as a part of the training. You actually move through the entire experience of how the body feels and behaves, when you take on certain postures. If you learn about anatomy and physiology in detail, you will be able to move your body in a manner which suits you or your student.

You can create a proper relationship between the body and mind by exploring different concepts in the process. You will learn how to be comfortable in your own body with the help of the knowledge.

Philosophy

The base of yoga lies on various Vedic texts, scriptures, Upanishads, and Puranas. However, all the principles do not apply to the realm of therapeutic yoga. You will learn various concepts like the earthy body, astral body, and spiritual body.

Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras is the perfect pathway that will help you to ward of evil and diseases. The first moral states that you should do no harm to others. All else will fall into sync. You also need to understand Kriya yoga and that is how you will develop your practice in the right direction, for betterment.

Sound healing

Sounds, mantras, and healing seem to go hand in hand in the realm of yoga. In the Vedic philosophy, sounds are called ‘Nadas.’ They aim to restore your physical, mental, as well as emotional well-being.

You can use various instruments to heal the body, through the healing of the brain waves and impulses, which carry the sensations. Bells, gongs, tuning forks, music, and kirtans play a huge role in the healing process.

Shatkarma (cleansing)

Shatkarma Kriyas are the cleansing and body purification processes that affect the body at a much deeper level. Moreover, you can get rid of the toxins that are built up. The yoga therapy TTC will give you complete profound knowledge of the therapies.

Moreover, you will practice the same under safe conditions. Toxins are fee radicals, which modern tests may not be able to detect. So, you need to cleanse them through such therapeutic ways to alleviate the pains and issues in the body.

Mudra and bandha

The hands and feet are mostly used in this stream and that is due to the presence of nerve endings in abundance. They are the most accessible as well, with respect to healing.

Anjali Mudra and Dhyana Mudra are two of the most important mudras, which you can practice for therapy. In the same manner, the bandhas or energy locks also help to manipulate resources from one organ to the other.

Yoga sequencing classes (practicum)

There are various types of therapeutic yoga sequences that you can put to use. There is one for digestion, one for back pain, one for arthritis, and so on. For every disease that you will try to address, the sequence will change.

The main goal of any yoga therapy class is to add classical yoga practices to suit individual bodies. The teacher, and in this case you, may be responsible for altering the asana or poses.

You will be using the principles of Ayurveda and philosophy to guide the body through asanas, meditation, and pranayama. When you are learning the intricacies, self-reflection is also very important. The teacher will eventually act as the facilitator in this form.
